It's not the dog. It's the people who want to get pit bulls because of their "reputation"

If dalmatians were known to be good fighting dogs everyone would be getting dalmatians to fight, and all the not so good owners would be getting dalmatians and training them to be aggressive. Which would result in dalmatians being at the top of U.S. fatal bites, no pit bulls.
