havent started writing about it yet, i am going to write about the ghurkas effect on the british army, among other countries that the british invaded. ill prolly talk a lil about zulus aswell.
swordsmaking isnt going so well. my furnace isnt very big so it can only handle small weapons, plus its winter and i have a lung infection, so i cant go outside and inhale all the smoke. i CAN (and i have) make some crappy decoration weapons. i made a nice-lookin orcish pick, because what else can i do. ive been thinking about getting an electrical heater thingy so i dont have to go outside to smith (pic related( www.rmcybernetics.com/projects/DIY_Devices/diy-induction-heater.htm ))
also, im having a sort of "sword/armor material crisis" because im thinking a lot about this new material, Qcarbon(i think its also called graphene) which i think can be used to make all kinds of cool bulletproof armor. Qcarbon is electrically conductive, its harder than diamonds, cheap, and get this: it glows when energy is transferred to it.
once i get my hands on a high powered laser i might start making somma dat sweetass Qcarbon

hey, how would you suggest that i should connect grip (wood) and crossguard (metal) and pommel (metal, but i havent made it) to the blade? i suppose that i'll drill 2 holes in the handle and matching holes in the blade, and then glue+rivet them together. the crossguard i thought i could weld to the blade, but im not sure how i should attach the pommel?

also, hows it going with the maille?
User avatar #56 to #55 - vashadan ONLINE (01/09/2016) [-]
Alright, try doing as followed: hilt can be attached 3 ways - either you take the whole wooden part - shape it, make a hole in it, and slide it onto the end part of the blade; make 2 wooden pieces, slap them around the tang, and then secure them in place by covering up in leather straps; or that one about making holes and just nailing it down - but, the best thing to do, is to combine 2 of the types.
Wielding the crossguard sounds like a descent thing to do, but make sure you have all the measurements set (so you dont run out of space on the tang), and remember the propper order - crossguard, grip, pommel.
Now, if your tang is long enough, you can just attach the crossguard and the hilt, leaving a little part of the tang in the end (4-7 cm). and then reshaping the end of the tang into a pommel - this is the best way to make it. Alternatively, you can just wield it to the tang, or make a "complex pommel", which has 2 parallel outgoing parts which are used to connect to the tang ( by making holes in it or wielding). Or, you can just wield the pommel onto the end of the tang, but use this method as a last resort.

My chainmail production is currently at a hold - i had finals followed up by all the christmas celebrations (and we, slavs, like to celebrate those alot), followed up by the continuing finals in 3 days from now, so im studying and eating mostly, but im forcing myself to make even the slightest additions to the mail. At this point i have a 4 paces wide chainmail belt, that goes double the length (over my shoulder), When I'll have 2 of those, i'll start connecting them to make a vest.

Hope my inferior knowledge of swordmaking helps in any way, good luck, brother in arms.

so i got an assignment in school, and i chose the subject "ancient, medieval weaponry" and apparently the criteria is, that i can only write about weapons from english speaking countries. do you know what countries spoke english since, well the dawn of english?
#54 to #53 - anon (01/08/2016) [-]
In the medieval era english was developing and in use only in Britain, it was only after the XVIII century (the end of medieval times) that the language started to spread with the British Empire expansion.

holiday vacations coming up and im finally gonna have time to make a sword
**** making the rapier, i realize im not skilled enough to make something like that
im gonna use the metal to make a reeeally long one handed sword. i dont have a proper furnace but that doesn't matter, im doing it just for the practice.
anyway, do you think a long, relatively thin one-handed blade would fly?
(and by fly i mean function. i didnt mean the sword would literally fly away. that would be cool tho.)
User avatar #49 to #48 - vashadan ONLINE (12/21/2015) [-]
Making a one-handed sword must be in touch with a few simple mechanics: 1. it must be light - 1.5 - 2 kg; 2. It must BE a one-handed sword - for a longsword, it'll be around 110 cm (8-12 for the handle, rest - for the blade). 3. It must be balanced, with the centre of balance placed 4 cm away from the guard (4 finger rule). If you'll encounter any problems with balancing the sword, make a crewing-on pommel to regulate the dispensing weight.

With my sincere regards, the bastard who cant finish his chainmail.
#51 to #49 - smartythechicken (12/26/2015) [-]
the piece of metal i planned on using for the rapier/one-handed sword, i cut into two shorter pieces. i was planning on making them super cool slashy-stabby weapons, but i remembered a video www.youtube.com/watch?v=0F-VVjqarZE
its a video of a twin-bladed sword thingy that has an electrical current running through it, making the sword a taser.
and i was suddenly left with a dilemma: do i make dual-wield weapons or do i make singular slap jap?

yo any thoughts on the borderlands 2 psycho axe?
ive seen some guy on youtube make something similar (zednoughtalpha is think his channel) but not a real "functional" one. do you think it could be done?
User avatar #45 to #44 - vashadan ONLINE (12/05/2015) [-]
Well, they look awesome, and they're easy to make, depends on how much detailed version you want. Making a curved handle would be a pain in the ass, but i believe i've heard someone mentioning that that's actually a component of a industrial saw of some sort.
#46 to #45 - smartythechicken (12/05/2015) [-]
oh yeah i forgot to mention: the one on the left is the unupgraded version, without anything being added to it.
the other one is... well...
ITS MY MEAT BICYCLE HAHAHAHA WROOM WROOM CONDUCTOR OF THE POOP TRAIN HAHAHAHA
***** it has dynamite on it.
next to the fuel can that sets the blade on fire.
because jet fuel cant melt psycho steel
anyway i think that if it didn't rotate, it would possibly grab onto flesh. and if it DID rotate then it would fly away as soon as you hit someone with it (or fly into the bearers dick DEEZ NUTS , depending which way the blade rotates), so i would have to make a version that could latch onto the victim, while simultittytaniously cut into them. while setting them on fire.
User avatar #47 to #46 - vashadan ONLINE (12/05/2015) [-]
It wasnt ment to rotate. Maybe it can explode, or maybe the dynamite is for a situation when the poor skag is too far to hit with an axe...so then you throw the axe...after lighting the fuse...

User avatar #34 to #33 - vashadan ONLINE (11/07/2015) [-]
Well, we dont use rapiers, because thrusting strikes are not allowed.

When i was about to start smithing further on Scar i realized that the current "furnace" isn't big enough, or designed for such big pieces of metal, so i'll start on another ******* project, i guess
i guess i'll write this one down right under the Jet Bike

Pic related its a piece of metal i found in a dumpster (poorfag)
im going to mount it on a stick. yes, on a stick. i'll probably put some LEDs and maybe a powerful laser on it at some point, but right now i just need to figure out a way to mount it on a stick without using ducttape. wat do?

i was inspired by dis: /It+gets+better/funny-gifs/5554861/

i thought that maybe i would make it into an axe, but i already made one of those.
#35 to #31 - smartythechicken (11/07/2015) [-]
So i found out after hammering on the gear thing that it was a bit brittle, so i decided to make the staff thing. Not really meant for hitting, but it looks like some necromancer staff thingy. Added some spare bones too.

dunno why im writing this here... i think its cos i do,nt want to forget it, anyway, here are a few ideas that i came up with
1: The power agonizer. its a weapon used by the Dark eldar in 40k comics. i thought that the concept of it was cool. its a whip that latches on to the spine of whatever it hits, and then proceeds to generate unfathomable pain into that creature. it got me thinking, because i have heard that plasma causes really intense pain, but plasma technology isn't exactly fit to go into a weapons like this.
2: Vibrating sword. so i was at the dentist today and sme kind of power tool was used on me. it was a little needle that vibrated 40.000 times a second. i dont know what something like that would do in a sword, but i think it'd be cool to find out.

sadly, its not like i will be making either of these anytime soon. i have lots of homework to do, and lots of other projects to finish.
User avatar #32 to #31 - vashadan ONLINE (10/30/2015) [-]
Well, you can make a bigger furnace out of an old oil barrel, those special rocks that keep up the hight temperatures, and an air blower.
If you want to make a mace or an axe out of this, there are several ideas:
Mace - drill a hole through the gear, stopping in the centre, stick a handle through it and secure it with either bolted on bracket, or wield it together.
Axe - cut in half, secure with brackets, can be done both single or double sided.

For the spining flashy thing, you'll need some arks to place the gear into, there's no rocket science to it, actually, just requires lots of wires, LED's and engines.
#18 - smartythechicken (10/23/2015) [-]
okay so i want ur opinion on a sword i wanna make. (i am gonna make some other swords and weapons before i start on the electrifryer)

So this sword i am gonna call Scar. its gonna look sorta like a katana, but half of the blade is gonna look really undone and ****** up, and the edge is gonna be more like a saw than an actual edge.

You know how a wound can get an infection, and it looks real bad? thats what i wanna do with this sword. I will not polish the "infected" part, but instead rub some citric acid on it and let it rust a little.

So as you can see in the pic, the edge is like a saw with spikes on it untill it reaches a certain point where it looks like a clean, neat sword.

The crossguard is going to be a round circle like a japanese sword, but its gonna be uneven and have some holes in it.

The handle i am thinking about making out of either bone or rotten/dead tree. or both. either way, im gonna have some string (or whatever) like the stuff on a japanese sword handle. im thinking about getting some fur from an animal to use as the string.

The Pommel is gong be hard af to make, as it is going to be detailed. its gonna be a wasps nest. duckduckgo.com/?q=wasp+nest&ia=images&iax=1

I got the idea of the sword, partially by The Hive from the game Destiny. (the gun in the pic is a hive weapon)
duckduckgo.com/?q=thorn+destiny&iax=1&ia=images

And i was also inspired by the godess of death Hel, who has a half beautiful, half rotten face.
duckduckgo.com/?q=Nordic+mythology+Hel&iax=1&ia=images
User avatar #19 to #18 - vashadan ONLINE (10/23/2015) [-]
Okay, first off, you should shape the blade. Make a wide bar but with the part that goes into the pummel. For making the "rotten" metal bit, we will need 1. something sharp 2. acid - nitric or 15% sulphuric. Or if u have an old car battery, open its lid, there should be some liquid acid in there, do be careful, that **** will eat ur flash and bones in seconds. 3. gas cutter

First off, heat up the soon-to-be sword till its red hot. Then, secure the blade in a vice, and take some sharp tool - wedge or even an axe - and start hitting the blade of the pummel under 30 - 50 degree angle - to make those spikes on the rotten part of the blade. Do be careful not to chopp off too many spikes, the blade will be thin unevenly and u'll have to redo the whole procedure.

Alright, we've got the spikes, now we need to make the tainted half of the blade a different colour? To do so, heat up the tainted part to a dull red and then quench it in nasty old motor oil (and try dipping it back into water to cool it off, oil doesnt quite set the temperature lower, that way the steel would be brittle). Why didnt we do this sooner might u ask? Well, if we did, the places under our spikes would be of different colour, that would stand out too much, and painting those parts would be a trouble.

Good, so now we have the tainted blade, but we still need that venomed rot to it? Best thing to use is a gas cutter, it will make fine craters and disparities in the surface of the blade, but we still need something to make them impercect. Right, thats when we get the acid, just pour it on some of the parts of the blade. To control and stop the acid, use chalk powder or plain water, and then maybe paint in the colour of your liking (because the acid will eat away the blackened surface, leaving the original tint of the steel under).

After the tainted part is complete, proceed to shape, sharpen and polish the untouched part of the blade.

Sure hope this helps, im more of a regular arms craftsmen, though i wanted to make an " undead " set of armour - broken here and there, rotten away a bit, stained with blood, that sort of stuff.
User avatar #21 to #19 - smartythechicken (10/24/2015) [-]
thanks for the tips, it'll help a LOT
if you want some inspiration for the undead set of armor, the rest of this comment is for the purpose of that:
The Hive from Destiny look pretty morbid/undead duckduckgo.com/?q=The+Hive+Destiny&iax=1&ia=images

try using burlap to get that old/orcish/undead look: duckduckgo.com/?q=burlap&iax=1&ia=images

I tried connecting some skulls and bones to some rusty chains, and it looked pretty good. i think they do the same to their armor in Warhammer 40k:

What im actually aiming at is to have a quite regular looking armour that just suffered the elements of time and battle, maybe a few arrows sticking out, nothing fantasy driven.
Alas, i cant actually craft anything, there is no workshop around, and my smiting skills are inferior. All i have is a little theory, and steel wire to make chainmail (which is only 20% done)

MFW im still only a peasant

Pic related its my progress so far on Scar. I just cut up the metal im gonna use. Im gonna hammerweld them together to make that bar. What kind of tips do you have for that?
User avatar #26 to #24 - vashadan ONLINE (10/25/2015) [-]
Either melt it down and pout into a mould, or heat up ant hammer then together. I dont know anything else u can do here
User avatar #27 to #26 - smartythechicken (10/25/2015) [-]
im thinking i should grind off the rust and impurities on the metal and afterwards let it soak for a few mins in some acid to getthe last rust off. what do you think?
User avatar #28 to #27 - vashadan ONLINE (10/25/2015) [-]
Definitely, but if you want to melt it down then u dont have to worry much about the rust.
User avatar #29 to #28 - smartythechicken (10/25/2015) [-]

User avatar #3 to #2 - vashadan ONLINE (10/21/2015) [-]
Yeah, but there should be some distance between the opposite weaves, maybe making them a little smaller. Oh, and they should be pointy, sharply, would conduct better that way. This might influence the density of the blade, but its not like ur gonna fight with it, right?
User avatar #5 to #3 - smartythechicken (10/21/2015) [-]
no, but of course ill whack some **** with it.
but if you had multiple inward waves like shown in the pic (lets say they are more pointy) wouldnt it just create an arc in one place?
User avatar #6 to #5 - vashadan ONLINE (10/21/2015) [-]
Hmm, yeah, never though about that.
In that case, we will need somewhat of a coil inside of the blades fuller. That would look ******* awesome, if it wasnt so complicated to make.
User avatar #7 to #6 - smartythechicken (10/21/2015) [-]
whats a coil?
it sounds like some cool science fiction ****
User avatar #9 to #7 - vashadan ONLINE (10/21/2015) [-]

#10 to #8 - smartythechicken (10/21/2015) [-]
yo what about that other stuff, the stuff with the tw metal rods (pic related) yknow what i mean?
User avatar #11 to #10 - vashadan ONLINE (10/21/2015) [-]
Yeah but we need the arc to travel through the blades, not just bolting back and forth at the tip of the blades, i dont know how can we do that.
#15 to #11 - smartythechicken (10/22/2015) [-]
okay so i thoght about it...
so if we use a tesla coil, wont the napalm melt it or make it super unsafe?
and the handle will need to be made out of something that is both heat resistant and not electrically conducitve, unless...
at that point it would be smarter to have a glove to protect urself against the sword, because then enemies cant pick it up. and then u can embarass them and say "do u even lift bro"
pic related, its me dropping the sword because its electrifrying me.
i think i'll call it the Electrifryer.
User avatar #17 to #15 - vashadan ONLINE (10/22/2015) [-]
And there shouldnt be a gap between the tips of the blades, will make them structurally too weak to be a weapon, and its all ready hollow.
User avatar #16 to #15 - vashadan ONLINE (10/22/2015) [-]
Yeah, either we make a special handle - rubber cowered with handle - or a glove - also rubber but with metal, somewhat a gauntlet. But, there is a small problem, maybe we dont want to set the tesla coil itself on fire, so dipping a sword in a sheath soaked up with napalm would be a problem - or not. Either way tesla coil would be convenient for the ignition of the sword. The main part is to keep it balanced, so it doesnt fly our of your grip.
User avatar #12 to #11 - smartythechicken (10/21/2015) [-]
hmm, ill try talking to an eletrical expert.
