I mean my dad has never hit me, but i'm not a brat, he just let me know when something was wrong and relatively and consistently punished me if i persisted, such is the case with a lot of my friends, It's just apathetic parents who cant be bothered to consistently discipline their children who end up with brats, hitting a kid is only one way to make them learn what is right or wrong, it does cause resentment though, the kinder way is to explain and punish through grounding or whatnot
