Some people are perfectly fine with people pirating their stuff. Heck, some people give it away for free from the get-go. Those people are really cool guys, and should be commended for their generosity. But, for the other people who still want to make money off their work, that should still be a viable option. Plus, the merchandise thing only really applies to the musicians themselves. There are tons of other people involved in producing any kind of major media who's income depends almost entirely on how well it sells.

And those are the kinds of bands at your local record store or involved in the local music scene. Those are the kind of shows you go to for $10/free and sometimes you find some really badass bands which you end up becoming a fan of(and part of being a fan is supporting when you can).
