Wow congrats. You guys destroyed something that sounds to be about 1 carat, and worth around 4k-26k depending on clarity and grade. Oh, that's still unset too.

how can the diamond be real
if our hammers are regular
#45 - fefe (04/03/2015) [-]
no diamonds are smashed very easily actually. for some reason people think diamonds are extremely strong when in reality the are very hard and not actually that strong. you can smash or chip all diamonds with a hammer.

Oh wow thanks, I had actually forgotten that, the fact that diamonds are still brittle even though they are hard

"still brittle even though they are hard"

That statement doesn't really work though. Hardness is what makes something brittle.
#178 - fefe (04/04/2015) [-]
Not true. Hardness is a measure of how much you can manipulate the crystal lattice without the atoms moving around, Diamond being the hardest of all because they don't like to slide around in their lattice at all. Diamonds are brittle because of the shape of their lattice is not very welcoming to compression or expansion, which is why hard shocks from a hammer can break the lattice and cause the diamond to become a powder.
