I loved Tyrion... up until A Dance with Dragons.

He just became so vindictive, and hated almost everyone for no reason. It didn't help that he was in the middle of Worse Africa for the duration of the book. The plotline with him and Aegon Targaryen looked promising, but you know that ended up. His chapters were just so boring compared to the ones in the first three books where his character really shone in the political environment.

That leads into my main problem with A Dance with Dragons: it's so boring. People complained about A Feast for Crows because it followed completely different viewpoint characters, but I actually really enjoyed watching Jamie and Cersei being, well, Lannisters. In ADwD, he brings back the old viewpoint characters Jon, Tyrion, etc., but they don't really do anything. He devotes most of the action to characters no one cares about, like Victarion and that Martell kid. And don't even get me started on Arya. She's worse than Tyrion in this book. Her story is so boring and makes no sense. Why is she on Braavos? What reason is there for her to join the Faceless Men. These chapters just come off to me as Martin trying to show that he can be oh so deep and philosophical.

The quality of Daenarys chapters varies. Sometimes they're great, sometimes they're mediocre, but mostly leaning towards good.

TL;DR: A Dance With Dragons is my least favorite in the series. It's good, but not as great as its predecessors.

i'v heard people cant get into Tolkien because its soo dry and mostly about scenery and boring. but i find thats one of the things that make him great, he paints a picture and gives life to the world, not just the characters

Maybe the reason they have no soul as you put it (although I don't particularly agree) is that they're realistic? If you think about it everyone is a set piece, a faceless stranger, a pawn in someone else's game or just a faraway, unknown element. Also true heroes like the characters in HP or many other books don't truly exist. But that's just my view on it.
