possiblydominator (05/07/2013) [-] I used to hate subs with a passion but eventually realized how much better it was to just read subs and hear the vastly superior japanese voice acting. I'm also picking up on the language a small bit. Mostly phrases and words, and stuff like noun and verb strucutre. #37

robotcomander (05/07/2013) [-] I know what you mean on picking up phrases, but it still boggles me when they refer to themselves, or others in the present group, in the third person. Do you know why? Its sounds like it might be a kind of term of endearment I'm still picking up on things but what really gets me is how they always mention the noun of verb before anything else. Its not "You're pretty cool Tach." It's: "Tachi, you're pretty cool" or something of the like. I'm not even sure what you mean by third person, but language is a like a different perception. Third person is maybe less weird over there? I don't know. I haven't really buckled down and tried to learn yet. #96

robotcomander (05/08/2013) [-] try picking it out. I noticed it in the subs where they use "you" or "you are", but the character says the persons name. i can't figure out why, but i think it is a type of sarcasm , or they really just don't have a differentiation and use the person's name to go with the other words in context. Speaking in the third person means to refer to one's self or others as if you were an outside observer. Example: "JklnHyd is explaining speaking in the third person." It would be expected for me to say "I", instead of using my own name. Similarly, I could refer to you by name, even though you are the one I am addressing. Example 2: "I am answering Infinitereaper." This sentence sounds more natural, but it is still strange for me to use your name when speaking directly to you. It would typically be "I am answering you." I know what it means bro. I never noticed that before though, so that is rather interesting No I said I didn't know what you meant by third person. but no worries. I'll pay attention. Very subjective though, I still prefer dubs, even the horrible ones simply because of my pre-defined westernized expectations. The original japanese doesn't take me horribly out of the story but I would always prefer the worst english dub over a pure subbed version. I used to be the same way. Trust me, subs triumph. Japanese is a beautiful language in of itself, the voice acting is great and the translation is better. That being said, sometimes the original voice acting is terrible, or there are times that the english dub is actually better. Hetalia and Black Lagoon were better in English IMO Lagoon mostly for the fact that the it made more sense for them to speak English in the first place. Considering there was only one Japanese guy. Can't really say the same, been watching long enough to know my own preferences. (Most anime's I like the dubs in are hated, I just recently watched Another and hope for a dub since the fact I had to read subs really took away from the immersion perspective.) Yes japanese is a beautiful language, however from a story telling perspective, it will always be preferable to be told from the understandable language. Which is why I consider saying that subs are better than dubs when you personally don't understand japanese (with a few exceptions for truly horrendous dubs, mainly fan-made ones) to be very anime snob-ish. It's a pseudo argument since you are reading it in english and as I said unless you understand japanese to a high degree it is the equivalent to listening to a bad dub except you receive much less from a story perspective. Purely opinion, but it stands up in observation. #142

N. Korean citizen (05/08/2013) [-] I usually watch subs because they haven't finished dubbing or they stop dubbing midway through. It's not worth putting yourself through the torment of switch from dub to sub due to wait or the dubbing company not taking the newer episodes. I. for the most part, quit watching dubs after watching the anime and figuring out the dub is still ongoing and having to wait for new episodes, whereas the subs have completed already. Some series don't dub the last couple of OVAs or specials and it's stupid having to watch them and not be used to their Japanese Voice Actors. tl;dr Subs are more convenient That's just my perspective. You can watch dubs all you want and i won't give a fuck and you won't give a shit about me. Well I'm an aspiring writer and fast reader so it doesn't hurt at all. Anyways, like I said, I'm picking up on the language. Subconsciously I understand and make the connections. I want to learn one day and will probably have an easier time because of this. I've heard it enough that I recognize much of it but just haven't bothered actually learning. Another thing is that sub translations are usually far more accurate and often explained better than dubs. Trust me I'm completely immersed. when it comes to dubbing a lot of the jokes are lost in translation, take bludgeoning angel Dokuro chan, its a great anime with some amazing dubs, but not in a single dub have I seen the porn joke in the library fully fleshed out so its funny not just there, if you can watch an anime in its subbed form do it, and start a show in the form you intend to watch it in before you watch any abridged versions, even if you don't think you will watch it, you may decide to eventually and it will sound weird hearing the characters voice change | ||
