Every other game is pivotal to understanding the series. Also, I played KH Chain of Memories on GBA, Kingdom Hearts 2, and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep on PSP before completing KH1, and I still had a good understanding of the story.

Dream Drop Distance and Birth by Sleep in particular, are just as important as main titles, and if you completely ignore them, you will have no idea what's going on in KH3, as the story took a completely different direction after KH2. Basically, KH3's story will be meaningless to you.
