self-proclaimed winners: the most valid kind of winner
User avatar #468 - eight (11/21/2012) [-]
Self proclaimed winners based off of direct evidence is the best. Christians would say "You can't disprove there is a God." That statement is wrong. Sometimes, no proof is proof itself.
User avatar #475 - panacea (11/21/2012) [-]
Actually, according to the scientific method a theory always needs to be falsifiable. For example, we can say "If I ate more vegetables as a kid, I would be stronger". Can it be proved? No? Can it be true or false? It can be both.
User avatar #481 - eight (11/21/2012) [-]
A theory...a theory is driven by measurable, tangible conclusions although not proven, have the possibility of being true with further research. A divine entity can not ever and will not ever be proven true because the only basis it has in reality is word of mouth and blind faith. It exists and survives because of human emotion driven by our psyche.

How's this: it is generally accepted that Energy is conserved in reactions. So Energy of one object cannot give another object more energy than it has itself. Heat is energy. The sun's surface burns at about 5500 degrees Kelvin, HOWEVER: the space just around the sun is at a temperature of nearly 1 million Kelvin. Seeing as how the sun is the hottest thing around in the solar system (Watch out Taylor Swift!), there is no definite reason for why this happens and it's still discussed today. Same with magnetism and gravity. Yet they are accepted as real and true forces, even though there is no proof for how they work.
tl;dr: even some accepted scientific principles have no proof as to how they work, though they are still believed to be true and relevant.

pic related: the power of science
User avatar #551 - eight (11/21/2012) [-]
Suns surface - proven to be 5500 degrees.
Space around sun - 1 million Kelvin

We do not know or understand how it works, but we have solid proof that those temperatures exist at those two places and we know there is an explanation for it even if we do not have the ability or technology to yet discover it. Because of what we know, even how little we know, we can develop theories as to why it works the way it does.

There is no proof or evidence of a divine being, we must take it completely on faith.

That is the difference. Science is measurable, religion is not. Science can be proven again and again. Religion evolves, dies out and changes according to society because we are the creators.
User avatar #603 - adxminisgay (11/22/2012) [-]
Or the evidence of a divine being can't be measured with instruments. Personally I don't have faith in a god but I hate it when people think they're better/smarter than people who do trust in religion.
User avatar #605 - eight (11/22/2012) [-]
Again, in some cases, no evidence is evidence in of itself. It is a red alert for don't waste your time. People who trust in a religion think they are better and smarter than me. Why do they get the right and I don't. At least I can come up with quite a lot of reasons to prove why they are foolish and wasting their time. They can't do the same.
User avatar #607 - adxminisgay (11/22/2012) [-]
they can't do the same in your opinion. perception is reality.
User avatar #608 - eight (11/22/2012) [-]
They derive their arguments through faith, an emotional connection in the brain. As we all know, emotions are often times misleading. I derive my evidence through things you can taste, see, smell or touch. That is not opinion, that is fact. Me not believing in God is an opinion. But my reasoning as to why I do not comes straight from fact. Blindly believing in something does not make it true, no matter how much you want it to. For the record, I used to be a Christian, I went to church every Sunday, I prayed every night, I read the Bible. And then a year or two ago, I finally got some sense knocked into me. I realized how backwards religious folk really are. How hypocritical they become. How often they break God's commandments and sin left and right. And above all, they become so incredibly prejudice. The Bible thinks for you, I think for myself now.
User avatar #609 - adxminisgay (11/22/2012) [-]
you seem to have some kind of vendetta against religion lol
User avatar #611 - eight (11/22/2012) [-]
A bit. Very little good comes from it. It causes many deaths, war and hate. It is no different than politics. It blinds people from what is really going on and gives them the excuse " It is God's will." when they see bad things happening. Often times, people don't even realize how prejudice they have become and if an non believer points it out, we are shunned and called Satan for wanting peace amongst different cultures.
User avatar #632 - adxminisgay (11/25/2012) [-]
you iterate your opinions like they're fact too

oh how the arrogant are doomed to fall hard.
User avatar #633 - eight (11/26/2012) [-]
Lets break it down shall we?

Religion causes death, war and hate = Indisputable fact.

No different than politics = Considering the human race has a long history of mixing politics and religion and in many cases, religion is the controlling center of government, this too is fact.

Blinds people from what is really going on = point of view. From what I have seen, religious people (Christians) tend to avoid education, the news and they live a incredibly simple life, or at least try to avoid the complexities of this world as it bring "unnecessary" hardships. Again, if you were in my shoes, you would see it my way. You clearly have not experienced what I have and it shows.

Religious people tend to be prejudice = fact. I have yet to encounter a non prejudice religious person. Some are worse than others. Some wont seem prejudice until you really get to know them.

Non believers are shunned = If you are a Christian and follow the beliefs, you are encouraged to avoid all non believers as they can lead you down an unrighteous path. Not all follow this, therefore it is under the certain circumstance.

I may speak as if what I say is fact, but so does anyone who is trying to prove a point. You did it yourself.

I base my opinions off of life experience, so yes, I truly believe them. If you are going to sit there and tell me that religious people are not arrogant, you would truly be diluted. Religious folk always consider themselves to be superior to non believers. They may not admit it, they may not say it, but simply have a debate with one and you will see. In fact, I encourage you to challenge religious folk. If they submit themselves to the debate, that in itself proves they feel the need to educate you in something you do not know or understand. It shows that on some level, they know better, and are better.
In truth, the human race is arrogant. There is not one person on this Earth that does not display such a demeanor.
#634 - adxminisgay (11/26/2012) [-]
Gandhi? Siddhartha? The Dalai Lama? Monastic Monks?
<---- This mother fucker right here? Does he look arrogant?

not to mention all of those people are incredibly religious. I think you focus too much on the stories in religion and not the moral values they teach (yes some are flawed, because mankind is flawed)
User avatar #635 - eight (11/26/2012) [-]
Arrogance is a quality all humans display at one time or another. Some may always show it, some may have long spurts of it, some may rarely display it and some may have small spurts of it. It is there though. It is there just like happiness, anger, sadness and whatever other form of emotion you can think of. You know as well as anyone else what people do, say, and think behind close doors; out of the public eye. Famous people are no different. Serial killers are famous for being normal, happy people to friends and families...but it is all an act. Politicians are normally seen to be confident, outspoken, intelligent and charismatic. But as most people know it is an act. There are many priests who seem like normal, Godly men, peaceful, nice and warm. But the next day they show up on the 9-O clock news in handcuffs for molesting young children. Those may be extreme, narrow examples, but it is not far from the truth. There is something of a balance between negative and positive emotions for the majority of us.

" I think you focus too much on the stories in religion and not the moral values they teach (yes some are flawed, because mankind is flawed) "
As a non believer, I do quite the opposite. I understand the moral values of the Bible even if I dismiss the stories as ludicrous and fictional. I am often known to encourage others to read The Bible and other religious texts strictly for its depiction of how to live life and how to treat others. It is a very good book to build yourself into a good person, or at least to try. Now, we must remember that there are plenty of these types of books in existence besides religious based texts... And they advocate the basic moral structure.

It is when faith in a divine figure/s is thrown into the mix and with the abundance of other religions all preaching similar values that cause many believers to act in the negative ways they do. I can't be sure why, this is a question I have long since to answer.
