As for how I progressed is I started off as a Porter basically I was everyone's bitch, I had to take out the trash, clean up the oil spills, clean the restrooms, ya know just basic low end stuff. I did that for about a year and a half before I got to even touch an engine. Then it just builds up on that, another thing is he will probably have to buy his own tools, most companies don't supply those.

I highly doubt that considering you need to do an apprenticeship to become a mechanic.

Your employer very well might have helped with that, but at 20 years of age, there is no way you completed a 4 year apprenticeship and make 200K/year as a diesel mechanic.
#91 - bann (11/03/2014) [-]
I have no way of knowing if what you're saying is true, it could very well be. Yet some of the hardest working people I know are working their ass off at walmart and can only hope to someday reach lower management and work 70 hours a week for around 40k while the slackers probably make around 33k.

It may have worked for you, I truly think some people fall into the right fit at the right time. Honestly though, odds are no matter how hard you work you won't advance too far without some kind of college. Most employers are biased towards people with degrees, there isn't anything you can do about that.

but hey I'm just going to show the people that I'm totally "serious" and soon I'll be making 200k too.

I agree, fuck college. In today's world too many people are going and ending up at the mcdicks asking if you want fries with that

I mean, unless you were able to stand the orifice bleeding boredom of getting an investment banker's degree.

But go to technical schools, don't listen to this idiot, tech schools are where it's at. otherwise you ain't gonna make shit

Someone has to be the brains and someone has to be the brawn, very few are both but those that are should be leading the world. No matter what though, it is the workers who carry the intellectuals on their backs. Philosophy and innovation are luxuries paid for by those who do the real work. Most people don't even consider where their food comes from or how it gets to them or how and with what their homes and offices are built, but they couldn't have their sheltered bubble world that they think is so important without the worker bees making it all possible. We are not 'evolving' away from the basic realities of nature, 1st worlders are just getting more and more detached and myopic.

However good paying jobs for those without sit down jobs are rare and the market is competitive, be thankful for what you have but dont get too cocky, you had a little drive and you had a lot of luck, most that work just as hard and are just as smart as you dont get what you do, stay humble.

okay true you don't need to go to college to be successful. BUT, like swimmingprodigy said you don't make $200,000/year. My parents didn't even graduate highschool better yet have a degree but they make around 400-600K/year owning a large pest control company in Alabama, they're just with business. Not trying to brag because no one on here cares but just my opinion, you don't have to be successful to be wealthy and successful, just good at managing money and business practice.
User avatar #118 - swimmingprodigy (11/03/2014) [-]
is that 400/600k pure profit that goes into your parent's pockets or is that revenue that the business brings in and then you have to pay all of the employees and other overheads from that?
#119 - blackmanrollipolli (11/03/2014) [-]
well on average i believe the company brings in 800K -1,000,000 a year, back before the economy crashed in 2008 it made over a million, but not anymore, now around 800K and then after expenses my parents profit 400-600K. It outsells Terminix by almost double in the counties it operates in. I believe they have around 10,000+ contracts that each pay once a year for termite insurance basically, homes are treated for termites quarterly.
User avatar #192 - swimmingprodigy (11/04/2014) [-]
Wow if you have 10,000 contracts then that must be a big company. How many employees does it have give or take?
#200 - blackmanrollipolli (11/04/2014) [-]
Umm i'd say about 15 that handle the pest control side and 5-7 carpenters who do repair work on houses that have been damaged from termites. Yeah it was actually the fastest growing Termite company in the United States back in 06-08, we didn't think anyone would believe that so we only claimed to be the fastest growing in Alabama.

Question... because my cousin is going to school in Michigan for Diesel Mechanics too...

> Are you making a 200K/year salary, or is that your calculated salary across irregular / hourly work?
> Could you tell me a brief story of how you progressed in the trade? I.e. the chain of Jobs and opportunities you exploited to get there?
> Where do you work right now?
User avatar #195 - trale (11/04/2014) [-]
The company I work for pays a flat rate pay meaning we charge a certain amount for how long a job takes on average. For example lets say an oil change takes about an hour on average you're only gonna get paid for an hour of work even if it takes you like 3-4 hours, but it also works the opposite way of if you can do it in 15 minutes you still get paid for an hours work. That is one of the reasons I can make so much in a year. Another thing is that they trained me and certified me in the shop and it's not a small-end shop, it's Freightliner.
#196 - swagbot (11/04/2014) [-]

He can't answer any of your questions because he made up about 50% of that comment.
If I had to guess, he's probably in the exact same position your cousin is (20 years going to school for diesel mechanic) and the rest of his comment about getting hired without school and making 200k is probably 1 story he heard someone tell him about 1 person got lucky and did exactly that.

Unless you have an in with the owner, no garage is going to hire someone who never went to a technical school.

You dont make 200k a year.
#100 - ihavealargehat (11/03/2014) [-]
Going into the gold mines straight after highschool and working underground clearing 120k is easy and surface work 60-70k is the norm. No college education required
#142 - anonymous (11/03/2014) [-]
Mining is almost the worst job a person can have. Better save up and retire in your 30s because there's a good chance you'll be dead by 50.
#185 - ihavealargehat (11/03/2014) [-]
What are you basing that off? There is so many safety regulation and such serious consequences for the mine for safety violations that it is sometimes hard to even get anything done. Mind you I'm talking only about gold mines, I'd imagine the coal mining industry is still pretty dangerous
User avatar #52 - trale (11/03/2014) [-]
A lot of high end places will hire people with no technical school. I didn't start off as a mechanic I started off as a porter, they trained me at the shop. And with a flat rate per job pay yes I do make $200k a year.

yea there will be quite a bit of leverage on it, which is why i need something that the ends of the boards slide into like a socket.

Also I should probably have posted, but the side overhanging is about 4 foot long (48 inches)
which means a leverage factor of 8, meaning the hinge would have to at least handle 1200 lbs of pull

that being said, I suspect its within reasonable bounds but if needed I could double the width at the point of the hinges.. (though I would prefer not to)
