- Who the hell voted for Powder Gangers?
New Vegas Survey
well howdy there
- That's why you use the rockets after the slingshot, so you can…
/sci/ goes to space
I'm retarded, can someone explain to me why we arent doing this?
There have been a few proposals to give a rocket an initial push from various things, mostly for reusable SSTO concepts. The reason they don't get built is that it is easier to just add a bit more fuel or an extra SRB than to design up a whole other system.
Remember, fuel is one of the cheapest parts of space flight. It's complexity and quality control that gets costly.
Oh. and here i thought fuel was the worst part
Because fast acceleration is harder on a vehicle than slow acceleration, it's mostly about inertia, if you were somehow able to slingshot a rocket, at the speed needed to remove just the first stage of a rocket, the whole thing would probably be crushed between the slingshot and the air,
thats right, the fucking air.
because the force of acceleration does not move smoothly through an object, but across the object at the speed of sound through that object, so in the time you manage to accelerate a rocket (slingshot style) the part your holding on to the rocket at would either smash into the further parts or seperate from the rest of the craft, you would have to build a device that can not only accelerate at ludicrous speed, but also do such to the entire vessal at once, and this isn't even taking into account the aerodynamic forces involved
Damn, i understand now. How come the same thing doesn't happen on the thing they use on aircraft carriers?
Much smaller craft that's actually designed to be aerodynamic, it also doesn't need to make the plane go very fast to have it able to be lifted through the air, the place was have to be going maybe 100mph if that, the space shuttle on the other hand ejects it's first stage at 28 miles up, going 3000 mph
Oh, i see. But how are rockets not as aerodynamic as those planes?
Well I may have been a little off base saying they aren't as aerodynamic, the space shuttle is meant to glide so it's a bit more aerodynamic than most of the rockets and what not, but they aren't designed to fly, or cut through the air,
I would say they have a bit of aerodynamic properties, but they are basically cones being shot into space. And considering the speeds the need to go, there isn't really a whole lot they can do about the aerodynamics other than make them into cones.
mostly they are just designed to do different things.
Alright, thanks for all that knowledge. Are you an engineer or something?
Nope, just spend way to much of my free time learning shit that I'll never need to know, from biology, to physics
well hey at least you can carry a cool conversation
True enough. Jack of all trade, proficient in some, master of none, but I think i would rather be very learned in at least one subject though.
That's actually brilliant, because most of the fuel used in rockets is for the launch.
- Congrats man, keep it up.
Don't let anything keep you...
- Honestly as someone who loves building **** I thought Fallout …
Fallout 3 and 4 differences
If you fill the town up with anything you can make and unmake a single fencepost for hours and that's the fastest way to level and once you're done you can step back and realize you're now closer to the grave and you'll never get that time in your life back congratulations!
Or just get 10 intelligience, 7 luck, idiot savant 2, and build 1 mutfruit settlement, corn settlement, and tato settlement. Once you get about 100 food per day from each settlement go do a questline for a week game time, come back and make adhesive with the mutfruit, corn and tato at a cooking station. You'll have all your perks maxed out by the time you destroy the institute if you build your farms early in the game.
Tapping 2 buttons is easier because I don't have 10 intelligence irl
- This guy his happiness is infectious.
- They went to Japan afterwards?
A war against scales now?
Probably, fat bitches love Japan.
- I didn't need this, I didn't want this but I'm still glad I go…

Chocolate catgirl, hell yeah.
