Well then sorry for going on a tirade there, but I've just seen too many people carrying around the whole "dinosaurs had feathers" thing like they thought they were the messiah preaching to a horde of ignorant barbarians.

(And yes, I know dinosaurs aren't like modern mammals, I used those first examples A) because animals as large as those more often use displays of strength to attract mates, their size making peacock-like displays impractical. The second examples B) to show that apex predators also do without those displays. It has more to do with the behaviors of creatures that occupy a certain niche (which can sometimes transcend divisions in kingdom) than what the animal is classified as, and for that we only have observation of modern species to guide us.)

Depends on how reptiles are defined. From a taxonomic perspective, it's tricky because organisms are no longer classified by observed characteristics. Originally, reptiles were cold-blooded amniotes. Now, with the discovery that birds are descended from dinosaurs, that definition no longer holds, because birds are warm-blooded. As a clade, reptiles must include birds and by extension, dinosaurs , in addition to the previous groups, in order to be scientifically valid.

that last bit is why reptiles aren't a clade. They're the only class that isn't, which gave me an extra paragraph of writing in my paper
