We can and we did.

India's many dirty water problems? Partly because the British went around putting in canals and streams in and around cities to prevent damage during the monsoon rains but after that the water in the canals become stagnant, due to the lack of rainfall for the other 10 months a year, and ends up rife with diseases and bacteria.

We tried to help... ended up fucking everything up. USA is just carrying on our legacy

Yes there are but as you say that's not the reason.

Also, while it's true that throughout history men almost exclusivily serve in the army. Lots of women died during child birth. I'd dare say to even it out since before the 19th century the amount of soldiers dying on the battlefield was much smaller.

But the actual game creators, the people who do all the work, are paid a normal salary. The only money lost due to piracy is what the company itself would have made, unless that company uses a bonus structure in which case some workers do lose a bit of bonus.. I should point out that if you are against piracy because the developers don't make money, then you are also against buying games and consoles(and cars, CD's, etc) secondhand. The company does not make money on those either. That's not a straw argument, it's logic.

However I should also say that no connection between piracy and revenue loss has been proven. Indeed, all companies are actually doing just fine, even in the face of piracy.
User avatar #165 - kinginyellow (01/27/2014) [-]
Look at the Sega Dreamcast. The system was able to burn games and people took advantage of it and pretty much ruined the system and stopped Sega from ever trying again. Say again that it doesn't cause damage that can sometimes be permanent.

And look at indie companies. If they make little to no revenue, especially after the cost of employees and equipment, they won't continue because it's not a good idea. If you made a game using your savings and found out you barely broke even why bother trying again?
User avatar #108 - thenewgizmobox (01/27/2014) [-]
but dude, here's a thought, if pirating is 100% completely legal then who the fuck would even buy games at all? absolutely no one because "dude, just pirate it" will be a common phrase. just because it's art doesn't mean there isn't a creator of it who's probably living on 10 bucks a month because no one's actually buying their content.
User avatar #65 - toensix (01/27/2014) [-]
True but there have been cases were a game was pirated so much and made so little money that the publisher disbanded the developer studio(Pandemic for exmaple if I recall correctly).

You're right that companies are doing just fine in the face of piracy. I'm just saying that it is wrong. It's akin to stealing(Yeah the original owner still has his copy let's not have that argument you know why I think it's stealing).

Last but not least I do believe there are some exceptions to the rule. If you live in a country where you're not able to buy a certain game then by all means download it. Same goes if you want to play a very old game which you can't get otherwise(I did this with an ancient medabot gameboy game.)

Lets think about this? Who stands to gain the most from pirating? We pay these big companies who offer "Super fast broadband". Most people will obviously use that to Pirate things (and play games, among other things). If they stop people from pirating, either people will find a way to circumvent that or go to some smaller lesser known broadband company to get the same speed as they're getting now but cheaper because 9 times out of 10 the big companies don't give us these super fast broadband speeds anyway. I bet if it wasn't for the courts, the big broadband companies wouldn't give a shit about us pirating.
User avatar #203 - toensix (01/27/2014) [-]
Look I'm not saying we should do anything about it. I think that's pratcially impossible without severely infringing people's right. I'm just having an argument that its wrong to do it.

I think pirating is all right as long as it's some bug corporation that makes like 300 million on the opening weekend alone.
On the other hand, if it's some small indie game studio, film company, or self-signed music artist, buy their shit or don't use it at all.

>Downloading
Downloading can mean many things. You can still buy the game, but to get is and play it you need to download it. And there's some free games that you can download (Not things like League, I mean actual full games from really known companies. Example, Team Fortress 2 form Valve). And when you pay fro a game on Steam. You have to then download it.
User avatar #150 - toensix (01/27/2014) [-]
I know I meant illegal downloading but I didn't feel like typing the first word because it's to long.

Victimless crime.

If you couldn't download X game I sure as fuck wouldn't buy it from the people that successfully controlled the Internet (only way they could prevent me from doing so), so it's not like they're actually losing a sale.
User avatar #105 - thenewgizmobox (01/27/2014) [-]
it's not exactly a victimless crime, even if you say you won't buy a game anyways the fact that you want to pirate it means at least some part of you actually wants the game. and while it doesn't have much of an effect on big triple A developers it's gonna have a huge impact on small indie developers which means they'll either slow down production of games, assume the game you pirated isn't good because it's not selling well and not make any sequels or continue its story in any way, or completely shut down.
User avatar #116 - critality (01/27/2014) [-]
I am broke %600 of the time, If I didn't pirate I simply wouldn't be able to game
User avatar #169 - thenewgizmobox (01/27/2014) [-]
then that's why there are thousands upon thousands of games totally free on steam, support your devs or they'll stop making games.
User avatar #163 - kinginyellow (01/27/2014) [-]
Then don't game. Pirating is why companies like EA took really retarded measures like SimCity being always online and the people who actually bought the game deal with the bullshit you brought on us. And since you're not even a customer you won't bbe missed by the company.
User avatar #224 - critality (01/28/2014) [-]
I'll just keep gaming thanks, I could care less what the company thinks about me.
User avatar #232 - kinginyellow (01/28/2014) [-]
Not expecting you to stop, just don't make excuses for it.
User avatar #69 - thewaronbeingcool (01/27/2014) [-]
If you have no money, and you download something you wouldn't have been able to buy anyway, what are you depriving the salesman of?

It's usually a positive thing, as a lot of pirates tend to buy the product in question when the have the money, or buy the sequel or merchandise or whatever.
User avatar #71 - toensix (01/27/2014) [-]
If you have no money you shouldn't be able to get a product or service from someone if they don't want you to have it. Yes in theory you're right but the product (and copies of that product) belong to the creator until he/she gives you permission to use it.

Also it's not a guarantee that they will buy any of those things. Many friends of me pirate a lot of things and most of the time they don't buy the game later. They just do it because they're cheap.
User avatar #58 - charagrin (01/27/2014) [-]
I will bite. I believe that pirating most media should be 100% legal. Because games, movies, books, and the like is art. And art should be open to anyone regardless of financial ability. I acknowledge that a lot of work goes into games, books, movies, and the like. however I can also acknowledge that these companies make a large amount of money off advertising, toys, shirts, and other things. So it should even out.
User avatar #70 - sonnyboii (01/27/2014) [-]
I dont think those individuals that work for the companies (which takes most of the money of course) would be very happy
User avatar #61 - toensix (01/27/2014) [-]
Sure it would be nice if it worked like that but in general I don't think creators of said media don't make enough money like that. Yes there are payment models which work like that but they don't work for every medium.

My problem is when there's a videogame without any ads in-game or a micro payment system, illegally downloading it is wrong then. You're taking away revenue that should be going to the creators of that game.
User avatar #63 - charagrin (01/27/2014) [-]
