User avatar #133 - Whaaaaaaaaa (10/13/2013) [-]
okay to better aid the slower crowd.. The okay logic is you can trade illegally games, movies, and programs.. While storing a database of internet history of US citizens in an attempt to catch and find terrorist is bad.
User avatar #152 - capslockrage (10/14/2013) [-]
You CAN'T illegally download games, and it's not trading. Illegally means you're NOT supposed to do it. Also those are all around the world.

>Your data should belong to you
>Trade other people's data without their permission on bit torrent

How is that not hypocritical?

Inb4 "I spent $60 on something that a team of several dozen people spent two years of their life working on, I own it and can reproduce it at whim regardless of the fact that the ToS which I agreed to clearly states that I cannot. Not that I don't pirate, I just don't pretend it's not stealing.
User avatar #32 - ronyx (10/13/2013) [-]
Then they shouln{t sell it for 60 bucks.
User avatar #16 - NeucularNINJA (10/13/2013) [-]
Look, you can pirate or be a cunt, but not both
User avatar #65 - herblegerble (10/13/2013) [-]
Pirates can't be cunts?
What about those people that get self-righteous about it? I've met people who say that they are actually helping the industry and that buying things was wrong. What is not cunty about that?
User avatar #70 - NeucularNINJA (10/13/2013) [-]
I meant, you're getting free, quality, product, so you shouldn't be a cunt
User avatar #17 - traelos (10/13/2013) [-]
Alternatively, I can accept my moral imperfection and become a better person for acknowledging my failings instead of coming up with hypocritical, one-sided, self serving bullshit arguments to excuse my behavior.

I mean I'm just spouting bullshit here, but I still can't stand people who think piracy isn't stealing. Regardless of morality you don't own the software, you own a license to use it. People need to understand that.

Morally speaking, creators should be given control over who is able to access their work, and at what cost. Disagree? Run Linux and use only open source and freeware programs and nothing else. Anything else has a price tag for a reason and wouldn't exist either because the creator would starve to death or because the creator wouldn't care enough to make it. Either way, you already have your Intellectual Property free utopia, in full. If every piece of software were free you wouldn't be playing GTA V in a glorious happy union, you'd be playing solitaire because that would be the best thing anyone produced.

Sorry if I wrongly assumed you were one of those people. It's just I hate them so much I had to rant.
User avatar #67 - thewaronbeingcool (10/13/2013) [-]
Piracy isn't stealing. It's copyright infringement which is a different crime. The law is very clear on the subject.
User avatar #26 - NeucularNINJA (10/13/2013) [-]
I don't pirate, that's why I'm a cunt But seriously, honestly, unless it's a really old game that's like five bucks and resides in the bargain bin, that no one will get paid for anyways, a lot of people worked hard on it. A lot of people need the money they make from it and piracy is such a stupid thing. If you're willing to put in the effort to pirate it, you obviously want it and are hoping to appreciate it, so why not give credit where credit is due and pay for it. If everyone pirates then no company will know what games are good and soon all we'll have is Call Of Duty and clones of that because they'll know that's what sells.
User avatar #103 - nogphille (10/13/2013) [-]
'effort into pirating it'
yes, sitting at home, watching an illegally downloaded tv show whilst downloading a video game you'll only play for 20 minutes and get sick of is really hard and/or timeconsuming.

the only thing that would change without piracy, is the amount of free games being played. (steam has a wide range of free games, that i haven't even touched yet)

i'm not going to spend 50€ on a game if i don't know in advance it's going to be worth it.
i'm not saying it won't be, but from my experience, MANY, MANY games released for that price really weren't worth it.

i pirate my games and if they're good, i'll buy them when the price comes down to 15-20€.
i think that price should still be enough for developers to make a decent amount of money on..
User avatar #35 - OsamaBinLadenz (10/13/2013) [-]
Ah, I usually buy my games, but without pirating, as ronyx implied, the developers of many companies would become greedy and milk for profit, much like Activision with their "Call of Duty" series. If I torrent a game, then it's usually going to be a game I've already spent money on, like Skyrim. If I already gave that company a sale, I feel I've given them enough criticism on their game by paying for it when I did. Music, well... those rich bastards live like kings, and you're right; it is all on YouTube, anyway, what with certain artists and bands uploading the entire album on it.
User avatar #33 - ronyx (10/13/2013) [-]
If there was no piracy then games would be over 100 bucks, you would get shit for games, uncompleted games, games chopped in half and sold as day 1 dlc, publishers rushing good IPs to make it to Christmas, shitty DRM that only affects people who actually buy the game, abandoned games that stop supporting a game 1 month after it rolled out, servers being shut down after 2 years and the game becomes unplayable, completely ignoring community{s complaints, not fixing your dammed bugs, publishers taking most of the profits, shitty ports being sold for 60 bucks, AAA titles arrogantly thinking that just because they{re EA and Activision they can sell a shit game for 60 bucks, etc etc etc. Oh wait, that is already happening. Why are indie games so popular right now_ because they{re a reasonable prize and most of the time have new ideas and actually listen to the community.
User avatar #28 - chuckbillrow (10/13/2013) [-]
I never pirate games but i always pirate music and movies becasue i have seen how those fuckers live
User avatar #30 - NeucularNINJA (10/13/2013) [-]
Music is fine, because it's all on youtube anyways movies... again it depends (In my opinion of course)

Illegally Downloaded Music - South Park
<-you need to watch this

Let me tell you a little story about two little boys named steve jobs and bill gates. These little boys liked to play with electronics. Eventually steve jobs met steve wozniak and claimed all of the woz's hard work as his own, like the apple one and two. Soon bill saw this and decided to rip off their ideas. But that wasn't enough, both bill and steve wanted a computer like IBM, so they stole ideas. But that still wasn't enough because steve was jealous about parc and how they had a gui, so his team of software engineers stole the idea, and improved upon it. Bill saw this and became jealous, so he also stole the parc gui and didn't think twice about it.

now both of these men became billionaires by stealing/ripping off everyone they came into contact with. So why can't I download (and apparently steal) a copy of some of their (stolen) software and it use for 6 months. One of my friends is going to work for microsft and is starting out at six figures so it's not like the company will collapse from a fraction of the population illegally downloading $10 dollar software.
