From what I understand graphene loses it's durability and strength with thickness, so what if we were to stack single layers of graphene between other 2D materials? Would it still lose it's properties? If yes, would it be possible to create large sheets of single layer of graphene for industrial use? I.E. Windows for houses and vehicles, planes and space technology etc.? And last question, since graphene is a crystal would it be possible to utilise it in telescopes? Sorry for the long read and any grammar mistakes I've made, english isn't my native tongue.
#50 - austinpowerz (02/18/2014) [-]
Graphene can only be made in very very small sheets (think 5 micrometers square and only a few nanometers thick) so it is predominantly used in other materials, my dissertation for example is using it to reinforce plastic with the aim of creating super strong super light plastics. So no it doesn't lose its properties when place in other materials.

Being a crystal refers to the chemical structure that it has and isn't related to how transparent it is. Graphene and other fullerene based products such as carbon nanotubes are black and generally turn anything that you put them in also very black and opaque. So no it probably couldnt be used in making glass.
#55 - austinpowerz (02/18/2014) [-]
EDIT: did some research, people have started to create larger graphene sheets.
#44 - shemaledong has deleted their comment.
User avatar #42 - Gandalfthewhite (02/17/2014) [-]
is there enough of it to make weapons and armor out of?
#51 - austinpowerz (02/18/2014) [-]
It isn't used on its own, it is used to reinforce other materials for two reasons.
1) it would be very impractical very expensive (and I'm not sure if it is currently possible) to create a graphene sheet that is the size of say a plate of armour.
2) This content is a bit misleading as it doesn't define "stronger" because something is strong than another material it doesn't mean that it won't fail before the weaker material. For example:

Steel is very strong in tension (if you try to pull it apart) and will withstand great forces without catastrophically failing. concrete on the other hand is pathetic in tension and will fail very quickly and abruptly. However putting concrete in compression (crushing it) increases its ability to withstand forces by ten fold making it in some respects "stronger" than steel.

Going back to the original question my project is to create super strong super light materials. I'm doing this by incorporating graphene into plastics. If it goes 100% correctly I will have a material that is stronger lighter and more flexible than steel with higher resistance to heat. However creating the material is very time consuming and expensive meaning that we are far off creating armour from it.
User avatar #40 - shadowkingdr (02/17/2014) [-]
if someone made say.. a katana out of it would they be able to kick major ass?
#52 - austinpowerz (02/18/2014) [-]
See #51 kinda the same question, but yeah, it would probably fail in a different way to a metal sword. Metal will bend and deform, whereas something like graphene with a crystal structure would break clean off without deforming (think of a broken plate). In terms of keeping its sharpness, like diamonds it would be very strong.
User avatar #17 - SteyrAUG (02/17/2014) [-]
When materials of a useful size are made out of it (i.e. structural I beams, C channels, etc.) does it maintain the strength it has when it is in super thin sheet form, or does the strength decrease with the increasing thickness?
#53 - austinpowerz (02/18/2014) [-]
As with all of the other answers you wouldn't use it as a large sheet of pure graphene as it is expensive hard to make and cannot be made at sizes that are larger than a powder. However placing it into other materials to structurally improve then is definitely possible.

I've noticed that all of these questions talk about the mechanical properties of graphene. It also has incredible electrical and thermal properties.
User avatar #12 - bremen (02/17/2014) [-]
Since you say you work with it. Would it be able to stop a bullet?
#14 - soloman (02/17/2014) [-]
Interesting question, since stronger doesn't necessarily mean in every which way. It might have really bad tension, since it's not a metal I don't think, so maybe it couldn't handle bullets well. austinpowerz, please mention me in the reply!
#54 - austinpowerz (02/18/2014) [-]
I'll get to this question later, going to uni now
User avatar #46 - bremen (02/18/2014) [-]
Well, soloman. To add to it. DragonSkin is a bullet proof armor that basically looks, feels, and bends like memory foam. Plus it is just about 2 inches thick.
#47 - soloman (02/18/2014) [-]
Is it really expensive?
User avatar #48 - bremen (02/18/2014) [-]
It's body armor that is basically military grade. I haven't kept up on it. So i wouldn't know atm.
#56 - soloman (02/18/2014) [-]
What I mean is why doesn't the military use it! The description makes it sound light, so why even bother with Kevlar for SWAT or anything?
User avatar #66 - bremen (02/18/2014) [-]
The military wont use it. What i mean is. Yes, DragonSkin is tough shit, but not a strong as kevlar and steel plates that the military uses. DragonSkin has to be revamped before it goes against anything higher than .45 acp. While the kevlar and steel plates can stop most ammo and leave bruises, other than a 50 cal which would usually go through.. DragonSkin is considered military grade because of its design to stop bullets, while not most, but it does stop them. What i mean is, DragonSkin is efficient as a body armor, But it isn't the best out there.
#67 - soloman (02/19/2014) [-]
I see. Thanks for the clarification.
User avatar #25 - funnychemaster (02/17/2014) [-]
It's not a metal. It's a monolayer of carbon atoms. It's basically graphite, but just one layer. Each carbon is bonded to 3 other carbons which is what makes it flat. In diamond, each carbon is bonded to 4 carbon atoms.
#57 - soloman (02/18/2014) [-]
i know. Is that supposed to answer the question? I know nonmetals are typically more brittle and have worse tension. Is it the same case here.
User avatar #62 - funnychemaster (02/18/2014) [-]
No, not at all. The carbon-carbon bond is incredibly strong. Also, there are alternating double bonds throughout the structure which makes it even stronger. But no, I doubt it can stop a bullet.
#63 - soloman (02/18/2014) [-]
Well are we talking about one layer? I suppose that would be ridiculous. I owner how many layers it would take to make it bulletproof.
User avatar #64 - funnychemaster (02/18/2014) [-]
Well, probably if you made a composite of graphene and polycarbonate, you definitely got a shot at making bullet proof 'glass.'
