The Philosopher's Stone was a "thing" before FMA existed. Old-timey dudes thought that it could magically transform lead into gold.
User avatar #69 - tinglyturtletaint (05/13/2013) [-]
magic in a sense. Alchemy was considered partially magical to an extent which is why most people did it in secret.
#68 - joeballs (05/13/2013) [-]
It was a myth, you can't turn any element into another element (ex. lead, gold, mercury, iron, anything that appears on the periodic table) without nuclear fusion/fission.
User avatar #70 - tinglyturtletaint (05/13/2013) [-]
only fusion. Can't do it with fission
#71 - joeballs (05/13/2013) [-]
Yes you can, Helium gets turned into Hydrogen through fission.
I'm a chem major, fuck off
User avatar #73 - tinglyturtletaint (05/13/2013) [-]
Yes but that's only taking away. You can't add to something through fission. You couldn't turn hydrogen back into helium. That's only possible through fusion.
User avatar #77 - themurp (05/13/2013) [-]
So you think that only adding to atoms change the element........
Also many atoms change their element naturally.
#75 - joeballs (05/13/2013) [-]
But that would be fusion. Read my statement again. "you can't turn any element into another without nuclear fusion/fission."
It has nothing to do with adding or taking, alchemy was ignorance and chance.
User avatar #80 - tinglyturtletaint (05/13/2013) [-]
I wasn't defending alchemy or even talking about it. I was stating that to make one element to another you need fusion not fission. fission can turn an element with a higher atomic number into a lower one but to go from a lower atomic number to a higher one you need fusion which so far isn't really practically do-able on earth, only in stars.
User avatar #81 - joeballs (05/13/2013) [-]
I know it isn't practical, but no where did anyone say that it had to go from a lower mass to a higher mass.

that's cool, but of course, they mixed CHEMICALS together to create these things. They were hoping they could mix CHEMICALS to create gold. How would a philosophers stone play into this?
