AND I SAY AGAIN SIR!!!! lol

The original post was about how destructive moral indignation is. Because we use our moral outrage to justify doing harm under the guise of Virtue, as he puts it. Well, if we have laws that are written based on our moral compass, is that still the destructive force he talks about? OR, outside of it being a paradox, is he advocating we get rid of our laws to begin with?

Like I said before I get what he's trying to say of, being very shallow, we get upset and little grievances against us and lash out against others under the reasoning of "I'm morally offended" even though no harm has happened. Like, the recent catcalling BS in New York. No harm came to that woman at all BUT her moral indignation lashes out at everyone as if harm had happened.

So, he says that moral indignation causes a catastrophe. Well, what happens when our laws are based on that moral indignation? Are the consequences (lashing out, seeking justice) still considered the worst and most destructive force?

Again, I know he's talking about instances similar to the woman catcalling crap BUT I hate it when people come out with pseudo philosophies like this trying to act smart. MORAL INDIGNATION IS ALWAYS ATROCIOUS. Ummm...we're seeking justice, primarily over those moral indignations sooo....doesn't seem like a problem to me.

What does best interest have to do with it? Other than, I will get punished for it. Yeah it is in my best interest not to kill someone because I will be punished but outside of that I don't see it as a case of "you have talents that I can benefit from." I'm all for the death penalty because to me, you can not kill the innocent, but you can kill the guilty.

Now going back to what I originally said. I have no compulsion to kill the innocent. But when I happen to hear about a rape or a murder, I have no problem hearing that those who committed the crime were in turn killed. So is that not my sense of morality? It's moral to kill a murdered but immoral to kill an innocent person.
#50 - titletaker (01/08/2015) [-]
I'm not saying that you're wrong. In fact, you're totally right. However, you have to remember that in order to determine if a law is moral, you must divorce enforced punishment/consequence from the law. That's Artificial Justice. If I'm a hunter in an uncivilized/ungoverned land and kill a carpenter, then the only consequence I face is that I now have nobody to craft the bed-frame I'll be raping his wife on.
Of course, the world doesn't work this way. We look out for each other as a species (for the most part).
No matter the founding principles or ethical origins, laws don't exist for moral reasons.

TL;DR: Laws are always lawful, not always moral.

That's not really very fair. You're assuming that this fire-based sorcerer even knows how to cast this frost spell. If he doesn't, sucks to be him. He can't cast it. There's only so many different types of spells a sorcerer will ever get to know. The wizard, on the other hand, can go out and learn whatever spells they want up to however much room they have in their spellbook, and if they fill that up they can go buy another one. Sorcerers have some nice perks, but they have permanent limitations. A wizard is only limited on a day to day basis.

1) Sorcerers and wizards share spells, but cast them based on different powers. If you were a wizard that focused on fire, and wanted to cast a frost-spell, too bad. You would have had to prepare yourself for that spell. A sorcerer, on the other hand, wouldn't need to prepare for it, but it wouldn't be any more or less powerful than the spell ought to be.
2) I use these images for making my own MTG cards, so I spend hours looking for the best pics I can find. I have no idea where or when I got these. Sorry.

Don't tell anyone, but I actually hate magic-users. Every character that I take seriously is a mage-slayer build. I usually start as a fighter, and build from there, but I love to sometimes build a mage that specializes in killing other magic-users. Sort of a "I know what hurts us most" guy.
In the setting I'm currently DM'ing, the world has grown to hate magic, because every great evil has risen to power due to magical knowledge.
