Firstly, it's my understanding that the Church itself has never utilized the death penalty; certain clergymen would be used to determine a heretic, but it was generally the secular Kings who would issue the death order because most kingdoms saw an act against God to be an heinous act against the Kingdom. As for why the Church had for so long condemned sodomy? It was seen as impure. I say was for reasons which I'll explain later. Sodomy is no longer considered a sin, though it is considered dirty...
