The problem is the the UK is comprised of four fairly liberal nations whereas the US is essentially 50 different nation states with vastly different ideologies. In fact 29% of GOP'ers in Mississippi still believe that interracial marriage should be illegal, much less gay marriage. My state just recently legalized gay marriage so its obvious how different i state can change to the next.
