It's the guise of niceness. If you follow up with anything along the lines of "This is what the evidence states" or "Just because it makes you feel good doesn't mean that it's right or true.", they'll get hyper-aggressive. It's basically so they claim to be the nice people who are being attacked.

But it's not that they "would do" this, it's that they do do this. In almost all cases they act extremely nice for the first one or two reasonable replies, and then they become exceptionally aggressive. The cases that don't follow that model are the ones where they don't give you that "warm up period", and just get aggressive immediately.

Not to mention that this is the kind of kindness that actually is just condescension. They're not being kind because they acknowledge that you might have a point, and they disagree while wanting to coexist, they are being kind for the same reason that you are kind to a dog that shits on the carpet: you think it's stupid and doesn't know any better.
