Sopa isn't coming back....

People think that that Congress is actively trying to pass legislation based on SOPA. This is not true. Presumably yousaw the headline "SOPA is back" (linked article is www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2014/03/10/sopa_copyright_voluntary_agreements_hollywood_lobbyists_are_like_exes_who.html), and immediately thought the government was working on new copyright legislation. Unfortunately, this is an almost complete misconception of the situation. There is no "SOPA 2014." At least not yet, anyway. Copyright holders are not trying to promote new legislation, in fact, that Slate article makes it very clear that "Rather than introduce another bill, they are talking about “voluntary” commitments among copyright-holders and payment processors, advertisers, and others." That is not anywhere near the purview of Congressional authority.

But wait! Slate said that the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing about copyright issues. True. But that doesn't mean that SOPA is about to become reality again. In fact, it means quite the opposite, as during the meeting, several committee members spoke out AGAINST introducing new legislation. For instance, Pennsylvania Republican Tom Marino said that "I’m really one that does not want the federal government to get involved." Texas Republican Blake Farenthold pointed to companies like Spotify as an example of what could be done, and said that copyright holders should "come up with a way to make it easier for innovators ... to license your content." considering how many people praise Spotify and Netflix, isn't that EXACTLY what you would want to hear? So most discussion on copyright, is based on the false assumption that the government has completely bowed to organizations like the RIAA or MPAA, when that really is not at all accurate these days.
