Oh and one more thing: some odd 97% of scientists are saying that global warming is happening and so little is being done on the government side of things to address that, especially when compared to other 1st world countries.

"America is great because her mission is peace, her purpose is protection, her provision is prosperity, and her lifeblood is liberty "
I can't say with any certainty that the past while in the middle east has been anything of the sort. Because on one hand, they ARE helping the people there, but also on the other, they ARE killing innocents. Though there could be a case made for 'LESS casualties' with these modern methods of warfare (on both civilian and American troop sides of things).

"America is great because when we see our sin, we decide to do something about it, and we are among the few societies which successfully and consistently evaluates whether or not we are living up to our creed. "
Ordinarily I'd agree with this statement and there are many instances where this is true (and truer than many other countries in comparison), but with the current congress and the republican insanity that currently plagues it (not saying the Democrats don't have their fair share of crazy, seriously some of those ultra 'Politically Correct' assholes are REALLY bad), I wouldn't say that America is being anything but an international joke.
You don't take care of your heroes (take a look at the first responders to the 9/11 tragedy, and the whole VA business with that massive floor bending backlog), your people are preyed upon by For-Profit schools, Banks, Troll Lawyers, a pretty bad handle on civil discourse with regard to police-public relations (though admittedly not as bad as some places), and what was that latest John Oliver (Last week tonight) piece on promises to allies to get their families away from the insanity they are fighting for in those middle east places? Yea, OW.

not saying these all can't be fixed very quickly, but apart from the fact that a lot of damage from these issues has already been done, if they aren't solved soon, the issues will only compound making them so MUCH worse. America can do so much better, and really so could the other 1st world countries.

As an American, I'd say that America didn't create any of those. The environment in which the Founding Fathers enabled such creations to exist. American Exceptionalism is not without a reason.

I think those last two don't apply at the moment... or the past 14 years... maybe 20...

That's a fair point. If it's a competitive program - maybe it's different. I've never interviewed someone from like MIT or Harvard or something. Still - if you study 30-35 hours per week, on campus....well, we expect 40 hours of work per week. But we also have an hour for lunch, and know that almost everyone is going to have 60-90 minutes of commute time.

So, we really do want someone who says, 'Well, I studied hard 30-35 hours per week AND ______________' because a full-time job at (most) companies I know of (US and UK/IE) are going to take a lot longer.

You mean second degree equations?
#272 - therealsupanova (10/13/2014) [-]
No, I mean quadratic equations, which are also known as second degree equations. Just like cubic equations are third degree equations. And quartic equations are fourth degree equations. You can play with semantics all day - they're the same thing and trying to demean people who use different jargon is one of the most asinine things you could possibly comment about.
