Look, I'm more into international politics than this crap, but I still think all this debate is expanding knowledge to some extent. Not that I think creationism is wrong or that either side can really be proven right until we know where the universe came from we probably never will in our lifetime , but it's debate about controversial subjects and I like it when people fight. I'm not "intellectually superior" for watching it, I'm just looking for alternatives to betting on dog fights.

Oh, it's 1:30 in the morning. Time for bed. We should kick this off again some time!

When you said you were listening to a debate, my first thought was, "I bet it's that Bill Nye debate with a creationist." I don't need to watch Bill Nye rail some random creationist. I'm sure he handled it maturely, but I don't like how every pseudo intellectual neckbeard on my Facebook page has been trumpeting Nye's great triumph over creationism. All they're doing is using the debate to validate their own prejudices, rather than using it as a platform to expand their knowledge of a discussion that's much larger than the bits of information they've had fed to them through memes and Zeitgeist videos.

Alright, then let's address the fact that he wants a perfect world where nobody every does anything bad to anyone else ever, EVER. That's not how life works and even though there are people with terrible self-control, that's what makes life interesting.

Authority ties into this because there is a threshold of tolerance people have. Authority often leads to misuse of power, and when that misuse of power becomes too much, people have to rise against it to stop stagnation. However, restraint, which can be taught as OP showed us with the dogs, will stop them from this. There is a point at which restraint is not helpful anymore. That's what I'm trying to tell you.
#315 - thepenname (02/05/2014) [-]
What the fuck are you talking about? By "he" do you mean the guy in the post? Because he never says anything about wanting a perfect world. You can't extrapolate something that general from a very specific comment made by some guy you don't know.

You're completely taking the post out of context. We're not talking about authority in as broad of terms as you're talking about. He's commenting on a very particular issue. Authority's in there, yeah; in the dog's case, there's an immediate third-party who's telling them, "No," whereas a human has a culturally constructed conscience that is affected, of course, by authority, seeing as laws and culture would ideally condition a person to know rape is bad. But that's where your comment's going off the wall: we're talking about rape. We're not talking about authority in general. He's not saying we should always be obedient. He's saying in the case of rape in particular, we should be able to show restraint, that we should know better.

Ignore that the dogs are being told, "No!" and complying. He's not saying humans should behave in the same way. It's exaggerative. And yeah, you shouldn't always comply with authority. Sometimes laws are fucked. MLK is famous for talking about how a fucked up law is no law at all. But we're talking about rape in particular. That's it. Authority's a component of this discussion, but not in the way you're making it out to be.

Since I need to put this for the most simple-minded of you out there:

1) I do not agree with drawing a parallel between men and dogs. As cute as it may initially sound to some blockheads, you're comparing a human to an animal. Why thank you for considering me an animal!

2) I was referring to the feminazi-moronic idea "Instead of telling us <<Don't get raped!>>, how about telling your little boys & lads <<Don't rape!>>"
Yeah, well, we also educate people that crime, whaddya know?!, is bad. Yet crime still happens.

Excuse me for not being blatantly obvious enough.
#329 - thepenname (02/05/2014) [-]
1) Is this your first analogy? You don't need to take the whole thing literally. Not all the characteristics of one side are transferable to the other. On the human's side, you can substitute the presence of a direct third-party telling you "No!" with your culturally constructed sense of morality, which ideally encourages you to show restraint. The dog owner didn't mean to say men are as smart as dogs. It's hyperbolic.

2) Incidences of crime and rape don't mean that education against such behaviors isn't effective. Crime can't be 100% remedied by education. It's about mitigation, not outright obliteration. I'm sure if you were to look up statistics, you'd find there's a lower crime rate compared to, say, a 200 years ago in America's Wild West. Societal constructs, meaning laws, culture, education or what have you, mitigate crime. But they can't stop it altogether.

What I'm saying is that the post is directly against rape, which is good, but it can be easily ripped apart with this counterargument that weighs much heavier on people than one problem. If we thought the way this person is suggesting, we'd be living in George Orwell's 1984 right now.
#293 - thepenname (02/05/2014) [-]
He's not saying you should blindly follow orders from authority. Remove the direct third-party (as in OP, standing right there, telling his dogs, "No!") in the human side of the analogy and replace it with one's conscience. That's what he is saying, in the case of humans, should be making you practice restraint. It's not a perfect analogy, but I don't think it's that hard to recognize the discrepancy and adjust the analogy accordingly.
User avatar #307 - yuukoku (02/05/2014) [-]

I never understand the line of logic of persons such as yourself. There's always the occasional person who will repeat the same comment repeatedly across statuses, but you decide to pick the most offensive comment possible for each content and see what results you get. You may claim not to be a troll, but your commenting up to this point is somewhat contrary.
