Clavatninenine brings up 3 films that pretty much epitomise what some call the lost era of western animation, where a large number of very good films came out yet for one reason or another fell to the wayside whilst worse films got a large amount of attention.

The obvious answer is CG Animation. Toy Story took the world by storm, certainly, but it was Shrek that really signalled the death of traditionally animated films in the west.

To put this in perspective:

Road to El Dorado: $95m Budget. $76M Gross
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron: $80m Budget. $123m Gross.
Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas: $60m Budget. $81m Gross.

Shrek: $60m Budget. $484m Gross.
Shrek 2: $150m Budget. $920m Gross.
Shark Tale: $75m Budget. $367m Gross.

Do you know what the first CG Dreamworks film to flop was? Trick question! None of them have flopped. Most have doubled their budgets and ALL have earned over $100 more than their budgets.

CG animation PRINTS money, even the shit films. People fucking LOVE CG animation.

But the greatest enemy to hand-drawn animation, and this includes why all of those beloved films failed, is the video tape. Children grew up watching these hand-drawn films on video tapes, and watching cartoons on television, until it got to the point where their less spectacular animation just didn't draw people into the cinemas anymore. Why would it? They can just wait for the video or tape it off of the T.V.

So in a time where these films showed more and more that they lacked the spectacle to pull people into the cinema something new and spectacular (CG animation) came out to blow these films out of the water, and with all of the money these films were making why would anyone ever bother making these films again? The last holdfast was Disney Animation and they turned over some decent profits for a while on their name brand alone but straight-to-video sequels and a string of high-profile 'meh' films led to them eventually giving up the ghost and turning to CG as well, and it's done them pretty fucking well so far.

Japan is the last bastion of hand-drawn animation in western cinema and that is SOLELY the work of Spirited Away. Ghibli films can still pull people into the cinema, even westerners, but even Spirited Away... $19m budget, $10m US earnings. $40m worldwide earnings outside of Japan. $250m in Japan alone.

There's no money in it, and the west cares more about spectacle than they do about art, so the unique art design of Atlantis, the timeless camaraderie of Miguel and Tulio, the Maturity of Spirit, the charm of Treasure Planet, and the Candour of Sinbad, all got lost in the melee.

nice post man, I wish you would review all the movies I look into on IMDB. I always get bulshitted or tricked by a bunch of paid reviewers or people with terrible taste lol.

Honestly, your best bet is to look over the films you like best, figure out why you like them as much as you do, and then use that to judge wether or not you should see a film.

Also, you'd be well-served to subscribe to someone like Jeremy Jahns on youtube who does pretty decent impartial reviews, or Red Letter Media, who are a far more cynical take on modern cinema.

If you've got a film/show/game you want me to deconstruct for you then hit me up but that's a temporary solution for a long-term problem and you'll be much better off understanding your own sense of taste rather than trying to mooch of mine, no offence.

If you need help getting there then lemme know and I'll get you started but I don't actually watch most films these days because I know before seeing them what they're going to be and if I'm going to like them or not so I can't review stuff I've not seen. Maybe that sounds arrogant (more definitely than maybe tbh) but fact is I've been wrong about films maybe... twice in seven years. The films I expected to love I did, and the ones I expected to be trash were, and the ones I figured weren't worth my time weren't worth my time, because I know films, and I know what I like about them.

It's pretty liberating tbh.

I appreciate the offer man, but usualkly it's like some webiste like viooz or the like, and me and the old lady are scraping the barrell for something new. If it doesnt have a trailer I usually skim it really quick to sample the camera work/acting/sound, but I also try imdb reviews for another dimension. If theres more than 10 reviews i can usually get a good picture but thats not all the time.

I'll keep you in mind for some opinions, but to make a person suffer for my entertainment needs seems wrong lol. we go through a lot of movies, 2 kids and not much social outside home.

good to have a new cool friend too
