I'm working on a full body at the moment, but before I continue any further, I wanted to run these sketches by you guys for remarks. The character now has black hair and gloves, and is also armor-less as requested. I also spent some more time trying to make the mask look real/interesting this time around, so hopefully that looks good.
Before I proceed with the full body, I just want to ask what sort of clothes you're thinking he should wear. I'm kind of stumped on what to do with his upper body after the jacket... should he just be wearing a normal, casual shirt under there or is there something else you'd like to see? Let me know.

This is sort of what I saw in my head as I read your script. There are some things I like about it and some things I don't, so let's get down to it. Oh, and let me just say that I am still willing to help out with the design of this character even though I can't be the full-time artist you need, should you want. I don't want to leave you guys totally in the dust!
I interpreted Volcanus as a morally ambiguous mercenary anti-hero, though not as heavy in the humor department as say, Deadpool. So, I decided I didn't want him to have a really vibrant costume, but wanted to keep him sort of uniformly super-hero-y, I kind of thought about Dante from the Devil May Cry games as a less-cartoony wardrobe inspiration, but ultimately thought that that would be equally flamboyant/not serious as a full on costume. In the end, I wanted this guy to look like he could be a real, practical mercenary. I decided to do a mix of armor and every day clothing so he sort of looks like he has a uniform, but is really just a normal guy that strapped on some home-made armor.
And then there's the mask. I was really, really on the fence about the mask and I totally don't care if it gets thrown away, but I really couldn't figure out if I wanted it or not. I mean, The Punisher's an effective character and he doesn't wear a mask. I kept it in the end just because it's concept, but we'll see how far it gets.
I went through a lot of ideas for different masks or face-coverings, but I always liked the idea of an "Army of 2" strap-on iron mask so I went with that. I might like what I did more if I didn't realize when I was finished that I had basically drawn some Deadpool/Red Hood hybrid... woops.
Well, let me know what you guys think. Like I said, I'll see this guy's concept through to the end if you want.
