"Tough decisions" is the most dangerous phrase in a leader's arsenal.

I'll admit, I'm an idealist, but the problem we've got is that the bulk of people either don't care or don't know what their leaders are doing and the leaders themselves are self serving opportunists. I believe people are basically good, which is why there's an outcry over Gitmo and the Interment Camps as soon as people find out.

When the first Artisans where given the vote in Britain one of the major pieces of evidence of used was that factory workers were willing to accept wage cuts rather than work with slave picked cotton.

Take genuinely good people and elect them into office. Things may not run as well when you can't cut corners but I'd say it better for it.

It comes down to a difference of jurisdiction. A murderer will be dealt with by local police. A serial killer will be handled by local and state police, especially if they kill in multiple locations. Someone who has killed a government official, or has bombed a building, or has killed across multiple different states will be handled by the FBI.
User avatar #244 - lyiat (12/15/2014) [-]
They're a governmental agency that works under the United States Department of Justice, so they are outside of our military. Strictly speaking, they are federal law enforcement (I really misspoke when I said that they weren't).

Basically, when you say 'cop' in America, or even the word 'police', you're referring to local or state law enforcement (Basically, the difference between London Police and the Met). Federal law enforcement is higher reaching, and they typically aren't refereed to as 'police'. Shorthand for such law enforcement is typically 'the feds' or simply 'feds', which basically means 'federal agents'.

The FBI actually have their own police force, specifically tasked to act as a security force in FBI facilities and enforce the law in those locations.
#348 - swagbot (12/15/2014) [-]
Lol.... you're arguing yourself in circles.

"Oh, the FBI aren't 'police', they're just kindly ol' 'investigators' "
Okay so even more to our point - why are they wearing military gear?
"... well but the FBI does have its own armed security force."
O-O...kay....... so they ARE police?
...
...or even creepier, they are some kind of SS-style paramilitary force?

Regardless, OP's point stands strong:

IT'S CREEPY AS FUCK that our IN-NATION 'police-type' forces have full military gear.

Can you seriously not agree to that point?

That's why I got mixed up, technically MI5 and MI6 are branches of the military (MI standing for Military Intelligence) but with a degree of autonomy whereas Special Branch are basically just police taskforces. I'm gathering the FBI have the responsibilities of both but complete autonomy, yes?

You want to make a point about police militarization, show off the armored APC's SWAT use, or the sonic cannons that they've started to employ for anti-rioting. Someone in an LAPD branded armor brandishing an automatic rifle and a grenade launcher. Not the fuckin' FBI. The FBI has been roughly the same since before I was born.
User avatar #193 - zealotgold (12/15/2014) [-]
most of those you see on the border as well, where they battle drug cartels and same with ohio, its very easy to get your hands on a automatic weapon if you know the right people, look at hollywood, look in the news, if i can get my hands on body armor that fully protects me for under 2k, they need the rifles to go through the armor

as well there grenade launchers have smoke grenades and teargas.. if i can fire 6 rounds in under 5 seconds farther than i can throw them and stay in cover or stay behind others you bet your ass i will, everyone thinks grenade launcher and thinks high explosive, its just tear gas, smoke, or pepper spray
User avatar #195 - lyiat (12/15/2014) [-]

Police do not handle the same cases they do. They deal with local crime. If something spans multiple states, or proves to be a threat to national security, it goes to the FBI. Police handle drug dealers, homicides, and rapists, not terrorist cells and mafioso.

Except they're not "god-given"

Basic human rights were invented by humans, given to you by humans, enforced by humans and can ultimately be taken away from you by humans.

Right to freedom? Nope, life in prison.
Right to life? Nope, death sentence.
User avatar #201 - thegamegestapo (12/15/2014) [-]
I disagree. I'm using God-given to emphasise that all humans have them as soon as they come into being and that they transcend human laws and inventions. I don't believe in a higher power but I do believe some things are fundamentally wrong, abuses of God-given rights are included among those, in my opinion

The right to freedom is conditional upon not committing crimes. Your rights are being abused if you're imprisoned without trial, that doesn't mean you don't have them. If that were the case then your captor wouldn't be doing anything wrong.

They're the Federal Burueo of Investigation. They are neither. They are not a civic guard, they do not deal with minor crime. They do not answer foreign threats. They pursue organized criminal rings and domestic terrorists.

The FBI is no more police than the CIA is military. They're government bodies of their own.
