This prevents the dog from chewing up things that it shouldn't, which can be costly and worst off all, very dangerous for the dog - chewing electrical cords and eating (yes, actually eating) drywall are NOT healthy.
The crate should always be introduced properly, so the dog is not afraid of it or stressed to the point of freaking out. If done correctly, dogs view their crate as a den or bed - mine love napping in theirs, doors left wide open. They go in on their own.
The crate should also be big enough for them to turn around, or lay down and stretch out - but for some dogs, any bigger than that will cause them to have accidents, because they are anxious and they learn that they can potty in one corner and have enough space to avoid contact with the mess. Dogs don't like staying somewhere dirty, and most will make an effort not to soil their own bed.
They should not be kept in their crate for more than a few hours at a time, depending on their energy level. If they need to be crated for 6 - 8 hours (this is FAR too long for puppies), it is best to devote at least an hour or two of vigorous play and exercise so they are so worn out and just want to rest.
Crates are a tool, and like any tool, they can be mis-used. Until you see a dog who is far too large, crammed in a tiny crate with sores and scar tissue from rubbing against the bars all day, every day, you have NO reason to be depressed.
This husky has a large clean crate with a soft blanket, and that silly face is the look of a dog who is happy to see its owner. There is no abuse or neglect going on here at all.
This is my husky. She loves her crate. Her cat likes to join her for cuddles in there too.
