Sorry, misspoke. Ayer doesn't touch the trailers. If my understanding is correct, a marketing company is responsible for the trailers. Ayer went back and cut a bunch of darker stuff from the film.

true we might never get an extended or an alternative cut, still im crossing my fingers for one. I do find it odd how they shifted the relationship between Joker and Harley, was there a femenist uproar? It seems the original draft of the film was to be a bit darker.

The general understanding, while probably not officially confirmed, is that after BvS came out with a bunch of reviews criticizing how dark and gloomy the film was, WB and Ayer went back and re-edited the film's trailers to be a little bit more upbeat. The final version of Suicide Squad was not quite as upbeat as the later trailers made it out to be. I personally enjoy the generally darker tone of DC's films compared to Marvel's, but I don't mind that they're apparently going to be less so.

I don't think there was any sort of mass "Misogyny!" cry before the film was released, but now there's backlash over how Joker and Harley's relationship is misrepresented in the film. I'd read about the deleted scenes a while ago and it looks like they were initially giving an accurate portrayal. I'd assume the scenes being cut were a result of the BvS tone backlash.

You just reminded me of that one episode of Doctor Who with the transparent cybermen in water.

Well I mean they were able to pull off some crazy stuff with The Thing, so it wouldn't have been that much of a stretch. The only part that really seemed to require cgi was the monster coming out of the wall
