Are they difficult to obtain? Or is it because it just seems like work is limited with such a degree?

Work with the degree is a bit less limited than most folks would have you believe. The problem is that it is less of an immediately skill-based degree. Something like computer science has a very well defined skill set associated with it, specifically the ability to work with computers to be painfully simple. English is more of an adaptive skill set, we know we'll never have to interpret poetry in the real world, but because we have practiced our ability to interpret the written word, we have well developed language skills within any context. Saying that English majors only know how to interpret Hemingway or something like that is like saying that physics majors only know how to do problems out of a workbook.

I believe the book is meant to represent education, and the television represent entertainment. Ignoring the flaws of that assumption, the picture is saying that it is hard work to become intelligent, and because of this more and more people (note there are more people in front of the T.V. than climbing the book) are choosing the blissful ignorance made available to them.

Seriously this is not in any way an attempt to belittle your choice of study, but what can you do with an English major? I'm honestly just curious.

I'm actually interested in teaching at the university level. I'm pretty much set go ahead to any pretty good M.A program after I graduate next year, then I'll keep going on for my Ph.D.
