There's only one person who really knows what happened and that's Varg but as far as I can tell:
Varg and a friend went to Øysteins place (knowing full well that there could be a death) because Øystein owed him quite a bit of money and had been bragging about how he would lure Varg into a trap and torture him to death and make a snuff movie out of it etc. Varg entered the apartment yelling something like "Give me back my mastertapes you piece of shit". Now, Øystein had been training kickboxing the last year or so and thought he was Chuck Norris. Kicked Varg in the stomach and expected him to just fold up but Varg pulled out his knife. Øystein ran into the Kitchen and grabbed a knife which he used to attack Varg. Varg sliced him across the forearms or neck so he dropped the knife and ran out yelling for help. Varg caught up with him at the door out from the house and rammed the knife right through his forehead so hard that he barely got it out again. Most of the cuts on Øysteins body were from broken glass (he was in his underwear) and Varg just cut him two or three times plus the killing wound.
Anyway, that's what I believe happened, could be wrong. In comparison Faust got 14 years prison for murdering a gay man who flirted with him and served 9 of them. I think they wanted to make an example of Varg.

He was a terrible person, a white supremacist.

Is that the sort of attention Black Metal fans want to attract?

I think he lives with his french wife and stepson somewhere near Bø in the county Telemark. About an hour-long drive from where I live :)

User avatar #19 - sodapops (10/08/2012) [-]
Um, wouldn't say that he got off easy per se. He got the maximum jail sentence (21 years) that a Norwegian court can give, same as Breivik. This for killing a dude that tried to scam him, threatened to kill him and when it happened Øystein tried to beat him up and grabbed a knife so it should really have been like 5-8 years for manslaughter or even self-defense.
Varg's band/solo project is called Burzum, an old favorite of mine (just like Mayhem).
#57 - strictlypornos (10/08/2012) [-]
I don't really know that much about the whole thing, except that where I live he would have probably gotten life in prison with no chance for parole
#34 - thecumshot (10/08/2012) [-]
He never tried to beat him up? I heard that he ran into his kitchen in fear and Varg thought he was getting a shotgun, but he didnt even have a gun in his appartment. Then Varg got a knife and stabbed him over and over again while Øystein ran through the corridors crying for help until he finally died from a stab to the forehead.

21 prison years in Norway equals 14 years, plus you can knock off up to 4 years of the sentence if you behave well. And Norwegian "prisons" have been nominated for the prize of "Best Architectual Design" numerous times, and the service is like a 3 star hotel. A poll on VG.no showed that 94.5% of the voters (a total of about 6 000 people) found the prisons too lenient. No matter how long your sentence is, you always get away with gold.
User avatar #24 - shaneac (10/08/2012) [-]
The point of prisons in Norway is to reform the prisoners, not punish them. After leaving prison, they're much less likely to commit crimes than people leaving US prisons.

I heard in norway when you're a homeless person the best you could do would be to kill someone and live in jail.
User avatar #58 - sodapops (10/08/2012) [-]
Homeless people in Norway and Sweden are pretty much homeless either because of drug/alcohol addiction or by choice. Anyone who stays clean, on the straight and narrow and tries to get his/her shit together gets a (admittedly shitty) apartment and (barely) enough money for food. Life in prison would be more comfortable, that's true but people don't starve here.
User avatar #56 - honkan (10/08/2012) [-]
You'd be living a better life (food, warm bed, safety) but you'd have less of a chance to fix your life. Though the government do a lot to help people released from prison reintegrating (I think that's the word) back into society.

He killed Øystein Aarseth, the guitarist of a black metal band called Mayhem. He did this because Øystein had been bragging about going to kill Varg and bacause the competed for the leader status in the black metal community in Oslo in the 90s'. He stabbed him in the forehead...
