You're a nurse?
You are right, we humans CAN do whatever we want. However, that hasn't always been the case. Before human civilization reached a point where our basic needs were all met by the push of a button, survival was a bit less guaranteed. You picked societal roles based no so much on what you WANTED to do, but more on who was best suited to do the job.
For example: In a hunter/gather society, males made better hunters, while the females made better gatherers.
Our brains still show this prepatterning. In things like how the different sexes navigate, multitask, etc. Men tend to navigate more by making mental maps. Women more on landmarks. Mental maps are better for roaming far and wide in search of game. Remembering landmarks is better for relocating that particularly abundant berry patch.
Men tend to have better focus and coordination than females, but females tend to be able to multitask better. One is better for bringing down an animal, one is better for harvesting edibles while keeping track of children and each other.
The list goes on.
So, no matter how much you try to make it a modern social issue, our differences are older than humanity itself.
Men will always tend to be better and some societal roles.
Women will always tend to be better at others.
Doesn't mean a man can't be a damn fine nurse.
Doesn't mean a woman can't be a damn fine mechanic.
Just means both are showing an aptitude not generally found in their sex.
While technically correct, you are using statistical generalizations to make a moot point, i.e even though on average men and women are better at different things, on an individual basis blahdie blahdie blah you've probably heard this and even mentioned this several times.
More to the point, i resent your use of the term always, because we are not only constant changing as individuals, also constantly evolving as a a species. Meaning these precoded patterns are not inexorable precursors to our modern behavior, but rather a more recent peace of history in what is to be, assuming that we don't wipe ourself out, a long and varied timeline of behavioral norms. We define ourselves as an individual over a lifetime as our species will continue to define itself over millennia based on individual trends.
