The movies weren't made until 2001. While many people read the books, the names were not really as much of a household name as they are today.

Well fair enough, but you've got to remember that the sheer fact that you're discussing this on the internet probably indicates you're into that sort of culture. Whilst to most people here it may seem unthinkable, but there are a lot of people who are not in to that sort of thing.
