I don't think animals think that far ahead. They have a meal in front of them, if they are hungry they will eat it. How old the meal is is irrelevant if its not scavenge.

I could maybe see them passing up a small meal if they weren't too hunger. And I think it would be more instinct then conscious thought. Or they're just thoughtless killing/eating machines... whichever.

It's definitely instinct that drives them to hunt gazelle and such, but you're right they won't expel the energy needed to hunt and kill an animal if they aren't hungry enough. It looks as if they're simply playing with it like the felines they are, i'm sure they had no intention of letting it go though. They are smart animals but not smarter than their instincts.

I've been there. I think you should take a long hard look at why you have these feelings for her. Identify the root of it all and decide if she is worth a broken heart.

You don't love her. Take it from someone with experience, if there isn't a mutual attraction between the two of you, you'll end up wasting your time for weeks only to find out she likes someone else.
