Plus we already had another one armed and on a plane with Tokyo's name on it.
#23 - innocentbabies (01/24/2015) [-]
No we didn't. Although the idea that it would have taken another year is BS. A third bomb was expected to be ready for deployment about ten days after Nagasaki.
#24 - mayoroftownsville (01/24/2015) [-]
Actually, Tokyo was the initial target but bad weather forced them to switch to the backup, Hiroshima.
#28 - mayoroftownsville (01/24/2015) [-]
Uh, yes you did. You didn't say the word Tokyo but you were addressing the claim that there was another plane headed to Tokyo.
#27 - innocentbabies (01/24/2015) [-]
Did you intend to reply to me? I said nothing related to Tokyo.
#25 - hopeyoudie (01/24/2015) [-]
Not at all, I think that what you meant was that originally Kokura was going to be bombed but it was cancelled due to bad weather and Nagasaki was nuked instead. Tokyo was never even considered for the bombing, as they needed to make sure their government would survive so they could surrender.

Japanese at the time cited the prospect of a Russian invasion as the reason for surrender, rather than the Americans new weapon..
#21 - anonymous (01/23/2015) [-]
Whoever made that claim was full of shit. The Japanese were really afraid of the entire nation being reduced to ashes by repeated nuclear attacks.
User avatar #16 - imnotkickthecat (01/23/2015) [-]
That would have literally broken the USSR apart. Matching their entire army to the other side of the world and then trying to take on people who were more than willing to die to the last man.

The casualties of any invasion of japan would have been just as big as the western war.

Also citation needed.

Go read a book, but you will find;

- The Japanese Supreme Council choose not to meet over the bombing of Hiroshima on August 8th, despite the bomb having dropped August 6th and news having reached Tokyo that same day reporting death numbers tolls that had not changed my a noteworthy margin by the next day.
- The Japanese Supreme Council was already in session, talking about unconditional surrender, by the time the bomb had dropped on Nagasaki on August 9th.

The difference between the 8th and 9th was the Russian declaration of war, invasion of Manchuria, and the overwhelming force; Japan was worried that Russia would soon invade mainland Japan, hence Emperor Hirihito's reference to "invaders" when encouraging surrender - not to mention those encouraging Hirihito to draw out the war had promised fortifications which were still incomplete.

The whole narrative that the nukes decided the war is a justification used by Truman; historians since 1964 have increasingly become skeptical of that take on the Japanese surrender.

I could cite you sources, but do you really think I want to list the materials for my course? If I wanted to reference, I'd be writing the paper that is due Thursday.
User avatar #26 - deathchain (01/24/2015) [-]
I'd imagine that the nukes were the icing on the cake, then. Japan already knew it was game over, and the nukes just made it even more over. They knew they couldn't fight the USSR and USA at the same time (Germany sure as hell couldn't), and with the USA's fancy new Auto-Victory bomb, their loss was guaranteed.
User avatar #29 - alcantara (01/24/2015) [-]
The nukes wouldn't have hurt the decision of the Japanese to surrender, but it sure as hell didn't convince them to surrender. I also note the Japanese had agreed to surrender previously, but not unconditionally; their only condition was that they could keep the Emperor. I see the rejection of that one condition by the Americans as the manufacture of a situation in which nuclear weapons could be tested in war conditions - especially considering that, when the Japanese relented to unconditional surrender, the Americans had them keep the Emperor to promote stability. The Americans allowed the one condition that had been put in place to come about, having rejected that condition and shown off its new weapons to Russia.

Russia wanted to at least support a satellite communist state. They also took a large chunk of Japanese territory (e.g. North Korea).
