Another possible explanation. The tree was exceptionally tall for its girth, and based on the greenery, it is no later than midsummer when the picture was taken. During a thunderstorm, the top of the tree gets struck by lightning, and the top branches took the brunt of the actual strike. The sap beneath the bark vaporizes, popping the bark off like a banana peel, with this result.
I'm not positive that this is what happened, but it's something.

honestly, i like vinyl. Not only because it has some real advantages compared to CD, but also because of the feeling of it. I don't care if that makes me sound "hipster". I simply can enjoy music more and appreciate it more on vinyl.
Also, calling every-fucking-thing in existence hipster makes the word worthless and completely unnecessary IMO

na i like old stuff like that its just they try to claim everything .
there was a movie which i highly reccomend you watch called " Mary and Max" trust me you will bawl like a little girl watching it, but its an incredibly moving story, and then a website claimed it was one of "their top 10 hipster movies" i was like, HOW ON EARTH is this anything to do with hipster? o wow some people don't know it all that well it must be a hipster movie !!
also try to watch a simpsons episode of "The day the earth stood cool" which is pretty accurate description of hipster culture

"actually it's incredibly useful. Maybe if you ever used a globe once in your life you'd realize the quickest way to Russia from the USA is to go north through Canada, over the Arctic, and then go back down south to Russia. Globes can make transportation incredibly efficient. "
The only thing more useful about a map than a globe is that a map is easier to transport. Globes are Sooo much better, as they're close to 100 percent accurate representations of the earth. No map even comes close to that precision.

You missed my point entirely. In order to plot a flight path, you need to have an incredible amount of detail, and common map scales are 1:50,000. You would need a ridiculously massive globe to get that kind of scale. If globes were useful for everything, then why would there be a need for maps and map projections? By the way you're not a genius for figuring out that it is a shorter linear distance over the arctic.... that's common knowledge.
#350 - meganinja (01/12/2014) [-]
Alright, so you're making a flight plan. You have one map of your airport to figure out which way you're going to be starting off going. Then you'll need a map covering at least the size of the distance between your two places to figure out what kind of bearing you would need to go once you're in the air to get to the destination. Then you'd need another detailed map of the destination city to figure out how you're going to land. That's a minimum of 3 different maps that you're going to have to fish out of somewhere. And for that second map it could be hard to find one of the scale you need, so you're going to have to do a lot of guesswork for how long of a distance it is, and you may not be entirely precise if your map's scale is faulty.
With Google Earth you can zoom. It's free. It's easy to access. I don't see why it wouldn't show runway direction. The downsides to it would be that I highly doubt it's going to be showing your restrictions, obstructions, and frequencies, so it's probably better to consult a map for takeoff and landing, but it would likely give you a better flight path than a map.
#352 - thumblocked (01/12/2014) [-]
Stop guessing on stuff you don't know about, and just understand that while a globe is as close as we can get to a perfect representation of the earth, there is a need for a flat surface. Out of that need comes an entire field of study about projections, which are basically different ways to project the globe onto a flat surface.
#351 - thumblocked (01/12/2014) [-]
You misunderstand how big these maps are. What is covered in the picture is only a fraction of the map. These maps are also standard for the country you're in, and oftentimes there's an international standard. I don't know how it works if you're flying overseas for example, but typically the extent of my flying is within a single map. Now, due to technology, google earth CAN sometimes be used in flight planning, but at the end of the day, every pilot needs to be trained with maps, especially because a paper map is more reliable in the air than a computer.

Yeah, really useful.
