| Not if you're in a country where your average daily meal is bread, and milk or water The misconception arose primarily due to the differing definition of a "foot" in England and in France. (Since it used to be determined by the kings' feet, and not every king had the same length of for). In France, a "foot" was longer than an English "foot", so when England heard he was 4'11" I don't remember his exact height in French imperial units , they thought he was hardly the size of a toddler, though he was actually somewhat average for a European male at the time (5'6" English Imperial Units). There's jokes that it was due to this discrepancy between his height that he decided to promote a universal measuring system (SI) to deter this form of misconceptions. It was also due in large part to his imperial guard. The men who were essentially his body guard were, on average, around 6 ft tall (really tall for the time) so he always seemed short beside them. 5'7 was the average height for men in France at that time. Other way around; British propagandists caricatured Napoleon as a short man in order to make him the subject of ridicule thus diminishing fear of Napoleon as a military leader. Realistically, Napoleon was of average height, but it is easier to raise morale with a laugh by making out a feral midget is the one attacking your person; simply hold him at arms length and watch his cute little arms flail in vein! #215 -
