I'd specifically attribute that one to Boston itself, personally. It's really interesting that across the country we have different definitions for the same thing within the country itself. I wonder what it's like to live in countries that don't span entire continents...

2. There are more "American" accents out there than Southern
3. A "Californian" accent is still considered to be an American accent, both in the US and in other parts of the world.
