By default The sole survivor should be using his rank to become elder. Given out of all of them he would have been fighting the same time elder maxsons ancestor was.

For me them being unnecessary is just icing on the cake. If they were really well done movies the fact that they were unnecessary wouldn't have really mattered. The prequels however weren't well done and so it just adds to it.

Look at it this way if you watched Return of the Jedi without watching A New Hope or The Empire Strikes Back would you know what's going on? No, probably not and that's because they are a contained trilogy. You can however watch A New Hope without watching the prequels and understand what's going on.

fair enough, but that's because its a trilogy emphasis on TRI, 3. Watch episode 3 without watching 1 or 2, you don't know whats going on. They were made post production of the originals simply to expand upon the story. its to satisfy peoples curiosity and to put the story out in a way that's pleasing (movies).

tl;dr unnecessary to the originals is not evidence of being bad movies.

If you were actually wearing proper metal armour (most soldiers back in the day didn't, they had cheapass shit like leather armour), then you were more likely going to die from bashing than cutting.

I understand they should be wearing armor, I just find the whole event to be a really poor representation of armored fighting. Especially when someone only loses when they fall over, so all they do is wail on each other until theyre too tired to stand anymore

there's also a regular 24 episode anime series that covers the Golden Age arc.
It's pretty good, but the music is absolutely horrible.

the first story arc is in film format in 3 separate films, its really good but the animation is kinda shotty. but it's worth a watch.
