| No, you are right. Usually, the first few times, I'll feed just as you described. It's only when they stop eating that you need to resort to different tactics. Look for telling behaviors. I noticed that when the ball python I mentioned refused meals, he was often times looking at his own reflection in the glass of his aquarium. Putting him in a container without reflection at night allowed him to concentrate without being disrupted. Generally speaking, I don't use aquariums for snakes for that very reason (in addition to the fact they are much harder to heat properly and take up a lot of space). ah gotcha. yea i have a 40 gal breeder tank that i got with the snake. its pretty big and a bitch to clean in the apartment. when you got time, mind telling me your set up? was thinking about doing a plastic tub system myself | ||

| Unfortunately, many ball pythons that have been fed live will only eat live. If the snake is a juvenile or younger, you stand a better chance of switching successfully to frozen-thawed rodents. Otherwise, you may find that the animal only accepts live prey or, if you are lucky, freshly-killed prey. You are correct that a lot of ball pythons go through winter fasting. One of mine just ate on Wednesday after fasting for three and a half months prior. In general, important husbandry that can effect their appetite is as follows: - Ensure the snake has places to hide - Ensure that you are providing correct temps, temp gradients, and humidity levels - Keep the animal in an isolated area - Avoid handling snakes that aren't eating - Consider getting the snake to a vet for parasite testing As for actually getting them to eat, some people cover prey items in chicken broth. Others roll them around in soiled rodent bedding to "scent" them. I personally have found the most success by feeding exclusively at night. For problem feeders, I put them in a tub with non-reflective surfaces that is filled with newspaper / paper towels. Makes them feel safer. Put the prey item in the tub with the snake and leave them together in a dark place for about an hour. Assuming nothing else is wrong with the snake, mine will eat using that method more often than not. Of course, these are only a couple methods. I have no idea whether or not it will work if the snake is accustomed to eating live and you're trying to feed frozen/thawed. All of my ball pythons have eaten frozen their entire lives and I take extra precaution to ensure that I'm not buying any that have been fed live. Feeding live risks injury to the snake and is typically less economical unless you breed feeders yourself. Not to mention, as previously stated, most ball pythons either take a long time or simply won't eat frozen after eating live. thanks, gotcha. i know he said he got her to eat frozen once. so do you just leave the dead thawed rat with them and let them do their thing? i was under the assumption that you have to hold and wiggle it around in the cage to simulate live, and if they dont take it then they're not going to eat it. maybe im retarded No, you are right. | beautiful. im actually a new owner. do you have any advice for feeding? i havent been able to get mine to eat yet, so its been since early october since shes had anything. the previous owner always fed her live, but i dont really have access to that here and i dnt think my apartment would like me bringing in live rats. i figured she is just winter fasting, but im still a bit worried Unfortunately, many ball pythons that have been fed live will only eat live. In my experience of handling my own snakes many of them don't show affection but there are some that are much more okay with being handled than others. My female spider ball python Scarlotte for example absolutely hates being handled but my male spider has no issues with anyone handling him. Snakes that you raise from a very young age tend to bond with the person that cares for them the most. My female lemon Miia is perfectly alright when I'm handling her but when someone other than me tries to hold her she clearly shows some discomfort. It seems that she just feels more safe in my own hands rather than in the hands of someone else. Often times when I'm letting her roam around she will tighten the end of her tail around my hand or finger and only explore the areas that she can reach without letting go. I like to think that she associates me with safety and feels more relaxed knowing she knows where I am. Perhaps its just all in my mind and snakes don't feel affection at all but I like to think in their own way that they do. #126 -
zielscheibe (12/17/2015) [-] I can't speak for all snake species - but my two corn snakes show at least different personalities and are able to learn certain things. The red one ( Morrigan ) is tamer and easy to handle. She likes to cuddle and is very curious compared to her sibling. The nature colored one ( Medusa ) is a bit shy and put's on a show every time i try and grab her. She get's into a defensive position ready to strike... but she never did strike me. I guess she is just a big show off. As soon as i grab her , she just goes all * ok ... you got me mate * and does not show any kind of agression . These snakes are 4 years old now and i can not 100% say if they show affection. They are able to learn routines like feeding times. I have trained them to remember certain * signals * i perform to tell them what is going to happen. For example. If i clean out the terrarium i slowly and softly drum against the bottom of the terrarium with one of my fingers. If i feed them i drum in a faster pace . I can clearly see that they can tell them apart and react differently . Still i think that snakes are able to develope some kind of affection ... or at least might be aware of you as their source of food / caretaker. If i give them to someone else to hold them , they seem a bit more uneasy with the situation than normal. So might well be they understand that you are friendly to them , but need to learn that over time. Hope this might have answered your question to some extent Best Regards He is probably my favorite male snake that I have, easy to handle and chill as a cucumber. I really like snakes, I'm also planning to start breeding next year which is why I've gathered so many. Shiet, i'm not really a fan of snakes but that one's pretty neat. Also i'm pretty shit at snake facts, but does this little guy choke its prey? Pythons are constrictors yes, however a common misconception is that constrictors (like boas, pythons, etc) crush their prey or suffocate them. In reality they cut off blood flow to vital organs like the heart and brain of the animal they're eating, which kills most prey very quickly. I was never here. Also most people won't give you source on the Anime Board, next time try to Google the image with a keyword like "anime" and you'll find it 9/10 times.
gotcha, ya i never do that. il try it next time. while your on here, it worth watching?
It is ok for comedy slice of life, but nothing too special.
