Really? I was told by a few Aussie friends that its illegal to kill roos because they are the national animal, even though they almost out number the people there. And that even if you do get a dead one some how that you shouldn't eat it because they are very wormy. Not trying to start a fight, just curious.

"Wild kangaroos are shot for meat, leather hides, kangaroo leather is the strongest and highest quality leather you can find. and to protect grazing land. Although controversial, harvesting kangaroo meat has some environmental advantages to limit over-grazing and the meat has perceived health benefits for human consumption compared with traditional meats due to the low level of fat on kangaroos."

It's illegal to kill them without a permit. I can't just go out an shoot them on my farm, but if I can apply for a license to shoot, say 10 of them for pest control. It's a little daft because if a kangaroo tries to jump a fence and gets caught in the barbed wire and seriously injured, I can't put it out of it's misery, which is a big point of contention down here.
Businesses have a similar permit for the killing of so-many kangaroos for meat. Honestly, the industry is growing, but nowhere near the size of cattle/pork industries here. A lot of people just aren't okay with eating our national animal. Also it's a very lean meat and it really stinks when raw.
Personally I think we should be eating it a lot more, seeing the massive damage stock do to our ecosytems (and by extension, us).
Australian flora/fauna and conditions have not evolved to cope with hard-hoofed grazing animals and it's been taking its toll the past 150 years. Plus eastern grey kangaroos (not the massive Reds of the desert regions) usually live in woodland, so there's far less need for any more deforestation for agriculture. They also require vastly less water, and they browse instead of graze, so grain-feed is less of an economic concern in feeding them.
But at the same time, look at the passenger pigeon in the US. There were billions of them, everyone shot and ate them, and now there are none. It's amazing what a few million hungry people with guns can do, so it's incredibly important that we balance out the growing industry with sustainable practices.
