anon (11/08/2015) [-] Common sense tells you otherwise. I cannot imagine any scenario where a person ends up pregnant by "accident". Laziness, stupidity, or rape can be the only causes. It's personal responsibility that tells you that perhaps you should use protection to have sex if you're living a shit life and are unable to support another person. Yes my sweet childhood of being completely impoverished has lead to me being unable to comment on stupid people with victim mentality. DrFlanigan (11/08/2015) [-] People don't want ONE more dollar per hour, they want FIVE. Let's say you work 2000 hours per year. That's 20,000 dollars a year. A small pizza shop makes, let's say, 150,000 dollars a year. They have 4 employees. That's 80,000 in labor costs, and let's say rent and operating costs are 40,000. Now the owner has 30,000 in profit to feed his own family. You raise the minimum wage to 15 bucks an hour, now it costs 120,000 dollars to pay all 4 employees, and the owner loses 10,000 dollars a year. If he raises the prices, he loses customers. His only solution is to fire some people, or his company, and his family, loses everything. But yeah, raising minimum wage is such a good idea guys. when I said 1 dollar, I was using hyperbole, but I digress, *Sigh*, you gon make me go out of my fuckin way Sure, the numbers are gonna work how you want when you just pull em from thin air, but lets look at some actual numbers. First off, it is an absolute bitch finding numbers for this shit, it is all so proprietary. Second, it it takes about $300,000 personal finance[0] just to open a McDonalds franchise. With that in mind, if your little pizza place is grossing 150k, you might be destined to close. From some numbers I found, the average pizza hut restaurant grosses about 600k[1]. 4 times your number. Lets say they have the equivalent of 8 full time employees. Debate me if you want on that number, but I wouldn't say it's much higher. 160k so far We can use this[2] as a reference for further costs. I think it's fair to skip the initial investment, since you are talking about a store going out of business, not a store never starting up. You owe 12% of gross to the franchiser 232k so far lets throw on another 100k for the additional fees on there (I feel I am being generous by doing this) 323k so far. And lets add on another like 50k for materials, those pizzas are hella cheap. 373k end That leaves 227k for the franchise owner. Forgive me if I do not shed tears for him. Granted, with the wage increase, he would be down to 147k, but that assumes that he doesn't get any more gross profit, which is a silly assumption considering the average consumer will now have more buying power, and he could probably raise prices a bit. tl;dr fuck your numbers furthermore, I'm sure he'd have even better profits if he used slaves. That doesn't mean he can use slaves. If your business model only works because you don't adequately pay your workers, then your business just doesn't have a place in the economy. You won't see me shed tears because a plantation is being closed down. [0] www.furioustees.com/How_much_profits_does_a_pizza_hut_franchise_make-qna49836.html#q122646 [1] answers.google.com/answers/threadview/id/493645.html [2] www.franchisedirect.com/foodfranchises/pizza-hut-franchise-07054/ufoc/ #87 -
DrFlanigan (11/08/2015) [-] You are equating a McDonalds to a ma and pop pizza shop. You are a fucking moron. Using PIZZA HUT as the baseline for your argument is moronic. Congrats, you proved that huge companies and people with 300,000 to spare won't be affected by the wage increase. Bravo. I'm sorry, I must have missed your numbers and hard evidence? Oh my bad, your arguments are just unsupported as of now. Do you want me to actually call my buddy Tony up and ask him about the small business he runs? The one he started on his own with his own savingsand has been operating for years now? I'm equating a FRANCHISE. FRANCHISE. As in, locally owned and operated. furthermore, way to ignore my second argument altogether. #95 -
DrFlanigan (11/08/2015) [-] So what you are saying is yes, if you have 300,000 dollars to start a franchise, you will be just fine. Got it. Ah yes, I see now, your lack of sources/evidence combined with your strawman argument has shown me the error of my ways. You know, I was almost unconvinced, but the way you absolutely refused to acknowledge half the things I've said really drove the point home, thank you. re-quoting this since you tend to ignore it If your business model only works because you don't adequately pay your workers, then your business just doesn't have a place in the economy. You won't see me shed tears because a plantation is being closed down. furthermore, how much of America do you think is employed by mom and pop vs a large corporation going even further, how many Americans do you think are employed by a large corporation and get paid minimum wage vs how many own a small business. If a few people go out of business for the benefit of the majority, fuck if I care. by the way, let me reiterate, go get numbers for your arguments. #105 -
DrFlanigan (11/08/2015) [-] Oh also, if you wanna talk numbers. 35% of the working population of America is employed by small or very small businesses. www.census.gov/econ/susb/ #120 -
DrFlanigan (11/08/2015) [-] So basically your argument is "fuck the minority" if the majority of people are fine? Why not bring back slavery? If a minority of people have to suffer in order to make the majority of lives better, it's a good idea right? No, slavery exploits the majority and actually, you must be missing the direct comparison to slavery I keep fucking making slavery is a perfect example of a business model that works because of low pay like you are campaigning for. And to that I say, if a business model only survives because it is not giving its workings a livable wage, then it isn't a business model that is worth keeping. #130 -
DrFlanigan (11/08/2015) [-] I am campaigning for uneducated morons who have no actual skills not making as much money as someone who has gone through years of education and are actually worth more on paper. "But what if you can't afford education" You don't need to blow 50,000 dollars on a college degree. You can do plenty of other things to increase your occupational worth. You have kids? That is your problem. Condoms are cheap. Abortions are also legal. Education is too expensive? Work two jobs, save up, and fight for your life. All you want is a fucking handout because you are too lazy to work hard for what you want. hypothetical right here, definitely hasn't ever happened to anyone > be high school student, have part time job to help support family > child of single mother, one sibling, mom works tirelessly to support us > mom gets injured, can no longer work > was going to go to college, but now I need to drop out to support the family > 18 years old and already supporting my family, all I can get is minimum wage jobs. > apparently an uneducated moron that doesn't want to work. #231 -
DrFlanigan (11/09/2015) [-] How old is the sibling? The mother can qualify for disability benefits. Student loans are a thing, just don't get a liberal arts major and you'll find a better job to be able to pay the loans off. There are ALWAYS solutions in life. student loans -> go further into debt -> no one is supporting the family -> sibling is too young to work -> are you sure the mom qualifies for disability? www.ssa.gov/disability/ The solutions you just listed aren't solutions, and as other people have pointed out, a degree doesn't guarantee a job. It's usually just a pretty piece of paper that says you spent 4 years somewhere. #239 -
DrFlanigan (11/09/2015) [-] Work two jobs. That's a solution. If an education is not going to get you a job, then you play the hand you are dealt and try to make everything work. Once again, McDonald's is not going to go "Oh I have to pay everyone more money, I'll keep everyone and lose a chunk of my profits." They are going to fire enough people to not take a hit. I'm not against the 15 bucks an hour thing, I'd love more money, but it's a stupid fucking idea and is just going to make things worse. It will fix the poverty line for like a month, then the line will just rise. You're very partial to success oriented plans. work two jobs -> massively increased stress -> health issue -> injury -> no jobs. Hell, I knew a guy who worked 3 jobs just to pay for his wife's medical bills. He is an EMT, he saves peoples lives! McDonalds needs a certain amount of employees to function. They've already optimized the amount they have working at any one time, they're not going to be able to fire people all wily nily without hurting business. They're gonna take a profit hit because they're profit margins are already ridiculous, as we showed earlier with the franchise example. #243 -
DrFlanigan (11/09/2015) [-] You keep mentioning huge companies and how this is going to help all the people below the poverty line. This is going to fuck small businesses up the ass, dropping them into the poverty line. #216 -
DrFlanigan (11/09/2015) [-] Loving the assumptions. You don't know anything about me. Personal attacks instead of rational arguments. So proud of you. #225 -
DrFlanigan (11/09/2015) [-] When did I assume you were poor? What hypocrisy? I never once said anything about you in this argument. #228 -
DrFlanigan (11/09/2015) [-] It isn't an assumption if it's true. Anyone who wants more money for the same burger flipping job that a monkey could do instead of getting a better job or multiple jobs is lazy. Well, I'm not arguing minimum wage for me. See, I was fortunate to grow up in a household where my parents could provide for me, live in a good neighborhood, start off my education well, pay for my college, and numerous other privileges that cannot be assumed about everyone. #192 -
antizan (11/08/2015) [-] Kekerino man, I can't tell if you're brainwashed or just legitimately retarded. You're part of this group of retards that never addresses this amazingly simple fact. THERE ARE NOT UNLIMITED JOBS IN A CERTAIN FIELD. Go ask some STEM degree holders how their job hunting is going. By your logic unemployment shouldn't exist. Because if everyone wants a job or a specific job there's room for them. #203 -
DrFlanigan (11/08/2015) [-] Oh I see what you're saying. There is a limited number of jobs. Let's strain this issue by making companies pay people more, and make less jobs available. Good idea! How do you propose one works two full time minimum wage jobs while still having time to go through college? If you're working two full time jobs that's 16 hours per day gone. Now, let's say you're doing a very, very light college course, and only have to learn for four hours a day. Now you have all of four hours to sleep, study, eat, travel between workplaces/college. Also, hopefully you don't get injured or seriously ill in that time, because you won't be able to afford to get that checked out. #199 -
DrFlanigan (11/08/2015) [-] I never said to work two full time jobs AND get an education. Work two full time jobs UNTIL you have enough money to get an education, then quit one job. "There's more people employed by big corporations who would benefit from a minimum wage increase than there are small business owners whom would suffer from it" seriously, you keep on focusing on smaller and smaller parts of my arguments without even addressing the vast majority of it. Next thing you are going to do is point out spelling errors as if my typos make you correct. #109 -
DrFlanigan (11/08/2015) [-] "Oh also, if you wanna talk numbers. 35% of the working population of America is employed by small or very small businesses. www.census.gov/econ/susb/ " So 35% of the working population are now scared to lose their jobs because the small business employing them has to downsize, or go out of business all together. GOOD IDEA. #124 -
DrFlanigan (11/08/2015) [-] "According to compensation survey administrator PayScale in 2010, the average income of small business owners varies widely depending upon their level of experience. For example, small business owners with less than one year of experience in running an organization earn an annual salary ranging from $34,392 to $75,076." 4 employees, change minimum wage, and the number becomes -5,000 to 35,000. FUCK NEW BUSINESSES, FUCK TRYING TO MAKE MORE JOBS, ONLY LARGE COMPANIES SHOULD BE FINANCIALLY STABLE! FOH with your 4 employees shit. FOH with your strawman arguements. FOH with your inability to link to your source. FOH thinking that only small business can make jobs FOH thinking that small business owners are somehow the only people in america here, let me try what you do. FUCK THE POOR, WE SHOULD ACTUALLY PAY THEM ENOUGH TO LIVE ON. WHO CARES IF POVERTY IS A VICIOUS CYCLE? I DEMAND TO BE MY OWN BOSS, WHO CARES HOW MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVE TO SUFFER? For the record, that ^ is a bullshit argument. I'm just mocking you. I believe in small businesses and believe they can still operate with a higher minimum wage. #138 -
DrFlanigan (11/08/2015) [-] Also, how is 20,000 not livable? Assuming you are alone, because if you have a family, you fucked yourself over and that shouldn't be anyone else's problem. Find a place that has 500 dollars for rent. No, you don't get your own bathroom, your own kitchen, a nice looking place, and you live with other people, maybe in a bad neighbourhood. That's 6000 dollars. You don't get a car, because you can't afford it. Buses run everywhere. Bikes are less expensive than a car. 1150 dollars a month left for everything else. 500 for food and necessities. No, a movie ticket, a video game, and alcohol are not necessities. 650 dollars left a month, and you have shelter and food. 7800 dollars a year. in savings. I'm pretty sure you can find an education for less than that. No one wants to make sacrifices. "I want to go out with my friends whenever I want! My life sucks cause I work minimum wage, I want more money cause I don't feel like bettering myself." >need a car to get to your job, employers wont hire someone who cant reliably make it to work, you've also assumed we are in the city. moving to the city costs money, and we're poor in this scenario, and you're crazy if you think you can find $500 in the city. Definitely not with utilities included >need a cell phone to get a job, employers won't hire someone they cant contact >need internet to get a job usually, some places do shift management online for one you're also assuming no prior debt. remember, we poor. It's likely we have some kind of debt #224 -
DrFlanigan (11/09/2015) [-] I also live next to a library. Free internet. Life has solutions, raising the minimum wage is not one of them. so everyone must live near a library and libraries are open 24/7 and libraries give me a car. that never breaks down, with health and car insurance. and its not a solution because you say it isn't? Sure solves a lot of the problems I'm talking about, or at least alleviates them. #223 -
DrFlanigan (11/09/2015) [-] Lol, I live in Canada, I don't worry about getting injured cause my Country isn't retarded and doesn't make me pay 5,000 dollars for a cast. Also, I live with 4 people, my rent is 480 a month. I work 20 minutes away from my house, full time. A cell phone is like 40 bucks a month. I have no debt, and I am currently in school. I guess I just can't relate to people who can't get their shit together. we hit post limit. thats why you cant reply but see, thats the thing, you just keep assuming all poor people are lazy. It's like it's impossible for you to comprehend that hardworking people can be poor. Someone isn't disenfranchised to you, they're a "pot smoking hippie". You dehumanize them. its ridiculous. Second, to be honest, they still wouldn't be making as much as me, but I'm fine with them getting a wage increase if it means my friends and people I grew up with aren't condemned to a life of poverty. #240 -
DrFlanigan (11/09/2015) [-] So you clearly can't see this from the perspective of people who are already making 15 bucks an hour after working hard to get that job. I can make the same amount of money doing an easier job, why wouldn't I? Future generations are going to be sooooo inspired to educate themselves now. I can get a job that pays 30,000 dollars a year instead of putting some effort into school? Fuck it, I'll just go work at Burger Shack and have all the money I need to fill my party needs. Why wouldn't you want other people to be doing as well as you? If the other job is easier and pays the same, go quit and take that job now, otherwise I'm going to assume your job is actually still good. > Fuck it, I'll just go work at Burger Shack and have all the money I need to fill my basic livingneeds. dude, why don't you want other people to have it easy? Something being hard for you doesn't mean it needs to be hard for everyone else. It's progress #245 -
DrFlanigan (11/09/2015) [-] It's not about making lives easier. This isn't a fairy tale land where everything is pretty and perfect. This is the real world, and you get what you deserve, what you work for. Life is hard. And you keep overlooking the fact that the job market is going to be so much more competitive. That 18 year old in your previous example is NEVER going to get a job making 30k because older people seem more trustworthy and will be given the job instead. #237 -
DrFlanigan (11/09/2015) [-] I can't reply to the other thing you said for some reason, so I'll reply to this comment instead. You come from a family who has given you everything you need to get an education, and I assume you now have a better than minimum wage job? You went to school, studied your ass off for, let's say, 3 years. You are now making X amount of money. You are telling me you'd be okay with a pot smoking hippie making just as much money as you handing out flyers dressed in a pizza costume? #233 -
DrFlanigan (11/09/2015) [-] The American economy being fucked up the ass still affects me. And people here want to raise the minimum wage too. Stupidity unites everyone. #44 -
anon (11/08/2015) [-] Where is the personal responsibility in your hypothetical situation? Who told this person it was OK to have children when working a minimum wage job? Who told this person that not improving themselves and not acquiring skills was acceptable? Who told them that staying in their minimum wage job for the rest of their life was OK? Who told them otherwise? Consider the kids were an accident, clearly they're an accident that should ruin your life Consider that the red queen hypothesis of biology en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Queen_hypothesis If you've been giving it your all merely to stop from starving, when are you supposed to improve yourself? Who gave them any other options? As a sidenote, you really need to consider this line from The Great Gatsby '“Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”' #163 -

anon (11/08/2015) [-] And I bet every one of those families was making it. Do you know why? Because minimum wage IS livable. It just isn't comfortably livable. And it isn't meant to be. It's meant to make sure you can survive. Past that you have to put the effort in yourself. If you don't want to do the work to look for a better job so be it. But don't blame a low minimum wage on why you have to live paycheck to paycheck. Oh yes, a better job. I guess they'll just go to the job store where they sell jobbies to anyone who asks for one. And yeah, they're living so well that they need government assistance to not starve. And some still starve, they end up malnourished, which overtime can lead to the children of these people to end up in min wage jobs themselves case in point: www.forbes.com/sites/laurashin/2013/07/19/how-she-lives-on-minimum-wage-one-mcdonalds-workers-budget/

| I mean, one day people were outraged at the idea of a law allowing it, the next everyone was praising it. I've always wondered what the context of this scene is? (excuse ignorance if it's a well known film/show, still have a few big ones on my bucket list) I'd say it's a pretty well known movie, but it's alright. It's from Billy Madison, Adam Sandler movie, really funny, would recommend even if you don't like his new stuff. You said the word everyone & he was being a grammar nazi about it. I'm not being a grammar nazi, that's not even grammar I'm just being a cunt While we're on the topic, did you know literally every single English(British?) people love the Royal Family? I've seen a couple people that seem to like them, so I guess everyone does. You don't need to say it to imply it. "did you notice how america went overnight from outraged to accepting it" "one day people were outraged, the next everyone was praising it" Idk, maybe don't speak on topics that you're ignorant about You aren't even wrong, people here fap to them... that's not a joke. People fap to who? The royal family? That's strange, I hope it would be to the brothers or kate, as those are at least not terrible to fap to That's strange I guess, although I'm sure there's people that fap to the Obamas. I'm sure there's even the extreme weirdos over there that fap to Liz that's true, she did, but I meant her currently where she's old enough to be your great-great grandma Nah people weren't really outraged, the media shows people being outraged about every new law, but in general I think most people were alright with gay marriage #81 -
anon (11/06/2015) [-] Not really. I personally know 5-6 people in my own family that will bitch until they're blue in the face about the SCOTUS ruling. Most of the people praising the decision already supported gay marriage, they're just voicing their approval more loudly than they used to. People who were against gay marriage still are, and they haven't gotten much louder because they're still spewing the game homophobia they have always been spewing. Moreover they're the minority now, and everyone else has pretty much been ignoring them for years because they're just a bunch of bigots and not many people outside their circle gives a shit what they have to say.
