Actually yeah, I'm pretty sure most of the stuff I've downloaded I've bought or rented to watch again with friends.

Well surely that negates the point of downloading it? Why would you do something illegal, with a chance of being caught and sentenced, when you're just going to buy it anyway?

And, btw, unless you bought every single one of the films you downloaded, it's still stealing, not borrowing.

Actually, no.
Most of the time I can't afford to watch the movies I want until a few months later.
So when I WANT to see them, I download them, and when I want to own them and I have the money, I buy them.

But people saying it's stealing aren't entirely right.
The definition of stealing is "Take (another person's property) without permission or legal right and without intending to return it"
I'm not TAKING anything, I'm downloading a copy of something which someone else has bought. I didn't remove ownership of something, I didn't inconvenience anyone.

If that is your definition of stealing, then grabbing someone's notes in class, scanning it and printing it out is also considered theft.

Okay, so you don't buy them then. I'm okay with you saying that you download some of the shit you watch, but you really do have to accept that you're stealing it.

But what you're describing is considered theft. Because you're robbing the company that distributes the film of a potential few pounds. You may or may not buy the dvd or watch the film in the cinema, but when you download it illegally, you're definitely not going to buy it. You can't say 'well I wouldn't have bought it anyway' cause if you download it, there's something in your mind thats telling you that you want to watch this film, therefore some day, when you have money and the dvd is in front of you, you might have bought it.

If you rob a bank and say, 'nah mate, I'm just borrowing it, be cool' they'll still fuck you into prison.
