i tell them new faults every day but i harass them about images being flagged i make gifs so i don't want to have to change one pixel in a gif before i upload it.

I don't get the term "Browser editing" but what you describes seems similar to something I know about.
there are different ways of displaying the webpage, you can either sent the entire script to the client and let the browser do the whole work (which is sometimes dangerous and can be exploited), or you can do all the work on the server which would send different webpages to each user based on the situation (with no exploitable data) but since it's a waste of resources it's not used always, usually it's a mixture of the two, if you need more information I have a networking book that explains it better

No, it's fine. I think the main thing I find hard to understand is how faulty this website is that any user can just edit it... I mean, is it only THIS site? Or is this something universal on every site?

you can either edit the local data on your computer (which is very simple and harmless to the website)
or you can edit the website in another way (by changing something in the database) which is extremely dangerous

or you could use some bugs and exploits to edit some minor stuff (which can either be very dangerous, or mildly dangerous) and that's what hacker usually do

last time I checked, if you try to edit someone else's content you get a funny message saying something like "nice try, you can't edit other people's content"

this shit is confusing, I would understand if he was able to modify it, but hijacking is a bit too strong :S
