If it doesn't say Bungie on it, it never happened.
Halo ended like it began, in a cryo-tube.
The "Wake me when you need me" was symbolic. The Spartans weren't human, they were tools. Weapons that had sacrificed their humanity for the good of their species.
John didn't need to wake up because he wasn't needed anymore. He could finally rest.

but noooo. Gotta keep the series going by pulling a villain out of nowhere and adding in a bunch of asinine drama. And then fuck up the multiplayer for good measure and strip away all the working parts of a nearly perfect formula so you can make it Call of Duty in space.

I'm not sarcastic. Bungie has a really bad history of making badass world setup, and then never showing it in game.
Master Chief's pre Halo history is awesome, and FoR would have been great for fanboys like me and newbies to see it, but they went against canon so they could make these stupid Spartan 3 guys. S3's were suicide soldiers, mass produced to die, and these guys are cool for some reason?
I'm sure it's explained on their website; Like everything else in their universes.
They never flesh out their characters in game; they always rely on external media.

Oh, I never got around to reading any of the books, I always assumed they had their own thing going on. Now that I know this, that sounds rather annoying that they didn't keep to their own story.

Well thank you for explaining, otherwise I would have been living a lie.

Yeah, remember how the Pillar of Autumn took off from the planet's surface and it was total bullshit? Ships like that are built in orbit for obvious reasons.
IDK, maybe Reach's gravity read the script and let the ship take off.
User avatar #33 - konysugandanbitch (01/16/2015) [-]
True, never thought of that.

Wait, a thank you? uh.. No problem!
I like to think I know a decent amount on Halo (considering I played em since I was 8, 20 now with a full load of playthroughs on all of them)
Most people like to argue both ways on Reach and I can see plenty of validities in both but as someone who read the book and looked forward to the game it disappointed as a "Prequel" hence why I think of it as Bungie's take on making a kind of Fan-game that wasn't really that true to the story. I'll stop babbling now since I could talk about this forever.

Reach was one of the better games in my opinion, arguably the last game in the 'original' saga (before 343).

Bitch, I love Reach! Reach is where all the awesome shit in the Halo backstory happened..... up until it was glassed
User avatar #25 - fargfive (01/16/2015) [-]
Wait, Reach is the fanfiction?
I refuse to believe anything that was produced after Reach ever happened. 343i can gargle a grenade.
User avatar #34 - spatulaman (01/16/2015) [-]
When you say "after reach ever happened" Do you mean every halo game or just Halo 4?
While I respect your opinion I must say that All of the Halos are great in their own way. I mean when Halo 4 was announced I immediately threw away any hype I could muster towards multiplayer and left it all on the continuation of Chief and how they said they'd Humanize him. Needless to say I wasn't disappointed.

Oh my god someone else read Eric Nylund's Fall of Reach holy shit
Isn't it weird how the books are better than the games?
User avatar #26 - spatulaman (01/16/2015) [-]
Not sure if Sarcasm? but Nonetheless the books are good for a lasting story and the games are good for putting that story into a format where I can shoot stuff

But Reach and Harvest were the beginning, they even mention Reach in the beginning of Halo: Combat Evolved.
#19 - spatulaman (01/16/2015) [-]
I fully understand that. Yet the game, while in good notions, doesn't follow suit. The whole attack being far too early for the events that took place. By the book The fall of Reach the Pillar of Autumn was surprise attacked by a Covenant Carrier and barely survived it due to Cortana's pilot ability when she took control of the ship.

They then returned to Reach in an attempt to join the fleet in orbit, which they were unable to do. They then witnessed the battle for reach from a large distance and on approach, there were tons of UNSC ships in orbit, with probably double the Covenant ships preparing to attack from afar.

By the time the Pillar of Autumn came into range of the battle in was nearly too late. John(Chief), Linda, and James, were dispatched to secure navigation data from a space dock to keep it out of Covenant hands, while the rest of the Spartan-IIs were sent to the surface of Reach to defend key installations that powered the SUPER-MAC orbital platforms that defended the planet, similar to the Cairo Station in Halo2.

James died(or as they called it, went MIA), Linda was mortally wounded, while John as well as SGT Johnson and a few marines who were on the station escaped back to the Pillar of Autumn, and they jumped to slipstream-space to Halo shortly after which begins Halo CE. That's not the events of Reach(game) at all.
Although a decent game I don't like the many inconsistencies either. When the books came out Bungie said they were Canon and I quite enjoyed them, and the games. But Reach went off-point with this, destroying their own credibility. I mean, even Halo 4 is based on the book on almost all points.
Sorry for the rant. There is no hate in this post.
tl;dr Reach didn't follow the books and this pisses on the the whole conviluity of the story as a whole. I mean if you don't follow the books then SGT Johnson doesn't even exist/make it into Halo CE.
