There's a phenomenon called sleep paralysis where you partially awaken from slumber, but not completely. In this state, your body generally can't move, because your brains is trying to prevent you from acting out your dreams. It does this every time you sleep, but when you wake up with sleep paralysis it can be quite frightening. I've had it a couple of times. You were in a sort of limbo between sleep and wakefulness, which caused you to impose your dreams into your awakened vision. I think there is a technical term for it, but regardless, it's not at all uncommon, and you'll be fine. Just try to reduce your stress levels. That's probably what caused it. Meditate, or take up a creative hobby such as writing or drawing. These can become stress outlets which will calm you down when your feeling panicky.

I can confirm this, I've had this while under a lot of stress. I didn't see anything (I was facing a wall) but I couldn't move and heard strange voices talking about me.

Mhm. Both auditory and optical hallucinations are common. Like I said, all that means is you're brain is showing your eyes what you're dreaming.

No, because he said he just opened his eyes and felt some symptoms of fear. With night terrors the reaction is more physically dramatic, like sitting straight up, screaming, and punching/kicking at an imaginary enemy. The way he described it made it sound like his body was still.

What he described was almost certainly sleep paralysis. But it's totally possible that prior to the paralysis he was having a nightmare, which is what caused him to rouse and enter that state.
