Anything that can alter or damage cells can lead to cancer. Too much sun can cause cancer, because UV radiation penetrates into your skin because of it's high energy, it can break or otherwise mess up dna.
I'm sure you've heard of anti-oxidants. They work by soaking up highly reactive oxygen molecules called free radicals that can bond to pretty much anything, including cells. I believe your immune system even uses this to it's advantage in fighting some infections, and has it's own processes in place to absorb alot of them.
Asbestos is a problem because it consists of incredibly small fibers that physically harm and scar tissue in your lungs when inhaled.
As far as I understand it, your body is constantly taking care of potential cancer cells as a standard process. Just being exposed to more and more types of radiation and other risk factors to the point where it gets out of hand is the problem. Hell, even flying is a risk factor for cancer (albeit a small one).

First off the amount of factors involved in the chances of falling ill with cancer is so incredibly large. Second, since natural selection rarely occurs in western civilisation the genes that increase the risk of getting cancer does end get filtered out, thus more people having the genes that cause cancer. Just to clarify we all have cancer genes, and they are necessary for the production or regulation of some bodily function. Those genes are controlled by other genes to keep them from becoming cancerous, but whithout those genes the cancer genes will express in uncontrolled division. A variety of virusses are carcinogene (cancer stimulating) and retrovirusses especially, they have got the ability to hybridise their RNA with the host cells DNA and theirby destroying the normal cell regulation. Besides these factors there are plenty of chemical factors all around us, mutagenes that also make the chance of getting cancer bigger. There are far more reasons but here are a few, hope it helped. And last but not least skincancer is indeed very well treatable as long as there is no metastasis to the internal organs.
