But Qui-gon and Obi-wan had been trained as jedi from a young age, with proper discipline. In this new age the jedi have only just returned and may not yet have the proper training down pact yet. Luke let his emotions effect him during his duels with Vader a number of times.

Very good point. But I still feel like the risks would outweigh the benefits. I dont think anyone would wisely put something like this on their saber. Its far too risky. You might say that a Sith would get off on the risk and might welcome the danger of having it, but I dont think that an actually trained Sith would find it very beneficial. They dont incur danger needlessly, they just know how to focus that fear when real danger arises.

The only explanation ive been able to come up with is shock value. If an enemy pulls out something like that as he's charging at you you're going to flinch or pause.
#130 - socialcastaway (12/01/2014) [-]
I disagree. Qui-gon and Obi-wan didnt flinch when they saw Maul's double bladed lightsaber. There's no way a Jedi would be at all disturbed by this little difference, and even if they were curious, they would have the mental fortitude to not let it effect them at all in battle. A common soldier may be put off by it, but a common soldier would be put off by ANY lightsaber being drawn against them.

In that case what would be the point of the cross guards? If they are only there to stop the hand from sliding up onto the blade then having them partially made of light is only going to be bad.
#124 - socialcastaway (12/01/2014) [-]
That is exactly why people are pissed off. There is NO practical purpose why there should be a guard on that blade. The only reason its there is because Abrams thought it would look cool to have so he put it in without thinking of the physics already established in the other movies. That's what Abrams does.
