| Ironic, hearing that from a Ron Paul supporter. Tell me, do you actually know any of his policies or what he actually wants to do or do you just watch the silly debate highlights and think with the rest of your unintelligent friend, "OMG LEGALIZE END WARZ!" Because Ron Paul is a racist homophobe with no qualifications for office. | ||

alanthewhite (10/10/2012) [-] **alanthewhite rolls 320,143,995** "As Western Europe became more orderly again, the Church remained a driving force in education, with Cathedral schools beginning in the Early Middle Ages as centers of advanced education, often evolving into the medieval universities which were the springboard of many of Western Europe's later achievements.[3] During the High Middle Ages, Chartres Cathedral operated the famous and influential Chartres Cathedral School. Using church Latin as a lingua franca, the medieval universities of Western Christendom were well-integrated across all of Western Europe, encouraged freedom of enquiry and produced a great variety of fine scholars and natural philosophers, including Robert Grosseteste of the University of Oxford, an early expositor of a systematic method of scientific experimentation;[5] and Saint Albert the Great, a pioneer of biological field research[6] The University of Bologne is considered the oldest continually operating university." Well actually, everyone overlooks Byzantine, an Eastern Orthodox Christian country that lasted until the 1450s and almost reformed all of old Rome but was stopped by the black plague. The real reason for such a halt in progress was the black plague which killed off much of Europe and it's smart people and led to instability. TLDR - Black plague bad Indeed, the Byzantines do not get nearly enough attention in history lessons these days as they deserved. While the majority of the western world which previously was controlled by the Romans was in a state of decadence and decline and life and conditions DECREASED rather than progressed with time, the Eastern Roman Empire thrived for 1200 more years, advanced human civilization while it feathered out around it and single-handily halted Islam from engulfing Europe and thereby shaping the role of religion on earth to this day as a result. And it was THEIR preserved histories which enacted the Intellectual Renaissance and prompted awakening. Well actually Charles Martel also played a gigantic role in stopping Islam from getting into Europe because the Umayyads had taken over Spain and Portugal and were moving into Gaul only to be stopped by years of preparation by Martel. Also known as "The Hammer". (Battle of Tours/Poitiers) #100 -
N. Korean citizen (10/10/2012) [-] Wasn't Byzantium multicultural? (Christians, Muslims and Jews living in the same city without killing each other) I may be thinking of the Ottoman Empire... Anyway, Istanbul/Constantinople is a pretty cool place. Well Byzantium was probably pluralist in nature about their Orthodox Christianity and the Ottoman took European Christian children and forced them to convert to Islam and fight as soldiers and/or be government bureaucrats. Kinda cool place? #74 -
ihaveakeyboard (10/10/2012) [-] I meant the fall of basically the entirety of western civilization into warfare and general mayhem compared to the stability of the Roman Empire. #82 -
oedad (10/10/2012) [-] i hate you dense motherfuckers who had one European history class in high school and think you know everything about the way the world works. From the fall of the roman empire until the 1800s the ONLY education institutions in Europe and its colonies were started the religious organizations. University of Paris, University of Bologna, Cambrdige, St. Andrews, Princeton, Harvard, Georgetown, Oxford, Villanova, 26 universities in the united states alone were founded by the Jesuits. All knowledge we have from the roman empire was preserved and translated by the Church. The Church prosecuted Gallileo not because they believed the world was the center of the universe but because they wanted to publish the findings there selves when they were ready and he went ahead with it himself. For 1500 years the Church sponsored technological growth and innovation. If you have an issue with religion or the church thats fine but know real history before you spout diarrhea out of your mouth TLDR; Almost every major university on the planet before 1800 with founded by either the catholic church or some protestant church which also preserved our knowledge of the Greeks and Romans. Learn your history #84 -
ihaveakeyboard (10/10/2012) [-] why call me ignorant... I didn't even comment on the Catholic Church or how it affected education. That deeply hurt my feelings | ||
