> 8 billion dollars isn't that much on a national scale
Yes it is. That's $26 out of every citizen in the US. But wait, only about half pay full taxes, so it's more like $52 from every tax paying citizen in the entire US. But wait! They probably borrowed the money they use to do this, so that's $52 + interest on every tax paying citizen of the next generation. All to maintain planes that aren't needed and don't function properly (yes, many of them don't.)

But that's not the big deal, the big deal is the estimated $1 TRILLION that will have been accumulatively spent on it by it's production. That's with 12 zeros trailing it. The image adds another 900 billion but I think that's inaccurate, it's adding other expenses related to the F-35 at all so they can inflate the number. But I digress, that's intolerable. This isn't even a major advancement relative to our current planes. We haven't had a single dogfight in the last decade, and have lost a whopping 0 planes in dogfights in almost 30 years. Then again, SVTOL wouldn't even help the plane's dogfighting ability, in that sense it's almost identical to the F-22.

> it's STOVL ... capability has never been in question
No, but the Harrier's has. Because it's just not worth it. If it needs an emergency landing, it's probably in enemy territory (and therefore it needs to be destroyed anyway), relatively close to somewhere it can land, or the fucking SVTOL doesn't work (since it's far more fragile than the rest of the plane). So 99.9% of the time they can land, don't want to land, or the damn thing is broken! Also, SVTOL still needs a runway, so it's not even taking away the need for one, just cutting the needed one in half.

well the plane as been grounded recently... again
User avatar #6 - slone (10/17/2013) [-]
yes it has and it has proven to be much more costly of a program than expected.

but the plane itself isnt bad and shouldnt have cost this much, the reason for all the problems and groundings has been lack of oversight of the contracted manufacturer causing major lapses in the manufacturers safety programs during the planes construction

this doesnt mean theres actually anything wrong with the plane, but that they have to pay to inspect each plane for possible defects because of the lack of oversight in the manufacturing process. which is why its service entry date is getting pushed farther and farther back.

the planes work, theyve been fully designed and tested (possibly unsatisfactorily), 8 billion dollars isnt that much on a national scale, they will definitely see combat, and its STOVL (short take off and vertical landing(it was never supposed to take off like a helicopter, but it can land like one)) capability has never been in question

but the program has definitely cost much more than it should have
