Except that if you post your mod for free its contents can be used by other modders and then charged for; letting others make money off your work. Not to mention the fact that "you can CHOOSE weather [sic, its whether] or not to charge or ask donations for your mod" isn't really accurate. Many modders who had links to donation pages have had those links removed and valve is making them file for the mod to be sold instead.

I would normally agree. However, Valve is going about the situation all wrong. The way they are handling the payed mods is simply atrocious. They get almost all of the money (75%) and any free mods still in the workshop can get removed as people take their content and pass it off as their own to sell.
#30 - stoopify (04/24/2015) [-]
Mods were made with the full knowledge that you couldn't charge for them. we aren't even getting a guarantee that the mod wont completely fuck our games, and what do you do about the mods that have dependencies on other mods? this adds NOTHING to the community or the quality of mods.

You're insane. Modding has been huge for the Elder Scrolls series for forever. I modded the hell out of Morrowind and did the same for Oblivion. For all Elder Scrolls games the modding community makes some real quality content and some shit. Up until now the mod community has been vibrant, fun, and FREE. Thinking bringing money into the mix is going to bring in better content is laughable. EA makes a shit ton and it doesn't mean they make better games; the modders mod because they love to do so. It's a hobby, it doesn't have to pay money. If these people really needed to be compensated for their work, we wouldn't have had a mod community all these years.

Come on man. volvo is already unfair, chipping 75% of the sale, IF you really support the mod-dev the just directly donate money to them, valve is just looking for a scapegoat to get money
#119 - anon (04/24/2015) [-]
I'm not against modders getting money for their work.

But a) this isnt about helping out those poor modders make some money. 75% cut, and no pay out below 100$ (that means 400$ worth of sales), show thats bullshit.

b) Valve doesnt care that you rip off other peoples work and mods to make your own, so much for standing up for the "under appreciated" work of modders

c) This is going to stiffle innovation. Modders who made mod source packs and mod tools are already showing distress over this. Most mods that got pulled from Nexus werent to put on Steam, but because the authors were afraid theyd get ripped off.

Modding is very itterative and modders constantly learn from eachother and use eachothers work in their own projects. With money involved this will break down.
Why would i let my stuff be used by another modder who could end up monetizing my work?
And if i monetize my own mod, why would i help others create content that could very well compete with my own?

Again, this isnt against modders getting some financial recognition for their work. This is about Valve (and Bethesda) fucking over everyone, a whole eco-system of modding, just for their own greed. Get other people to make DLC for you, people you dont have to pay unless they actually sell (and sell enough) and they get scraps at best, but without any of the responsibility.
Mod doesnt work? Tough shit, your refund is only within 24h and that is in store credit, not an actual refund.

All the while playing it off as some messiah for modding, as if they are doing anyone other than themselves a favor.
Also what about mods based on someone else's IP? Think Warner Bros might get a bit uppity about mods when other people are using LotR IP to make mods for profit? Do we really want to draw the attention to something that has always been kind of an endorsed legal grey area?

I predict this will fail and Nexus will look into making it easier and more convenient for people to donate to mod authors. Something i fully support.

So what happens when you pay for a mod that ends up clashing with other mods you already have, which almost always occurs at some point during the modding process. Now you're out $5 bucks for a mod you can't use, or have to get rid of the old mod to use the one you paid for.

No more trial and error, mod 'till it breaks fun times.

Not to mention that the people who actually did the work make next to no money compared to what valve takes. If you want the devs to make money, why not just donate?

until mod unofficial skyrim patches gets pricetags, well?. Also there is a difference between mods and DLC. DLC is ensured to be more good than mods since its original dev made, meanwhile mods are just player made "mods" quality is not ensured. how would you feel for paying like 5$ for a useless mod that you uninstalled because its bad?
#76 - anon (04/24/2015) [-]
They included a 24 hour refund policy, if you want to get a refund on the mod you bought you can get it no question asked in the first 24 hours after you buy it.
24 hours is enough to know if you want to keep the mod or not
#83 - anon (04/24/2015) [-]
And what if the game gets an update (not likely for Skyrim, but this is a system that they want to expand) and a mod breaks after those 24h?
What if its a big mod and you dont find out it's broken later on after the 24h is up?
What if the modmaker breaks it with an update? Or one of the dependancies breaks it (i.e. SKSE, they said they dont want monetized mods to work with it)

If those 24h are up, and any of the myriad of feasible things happen that breaks the mod or has the mod break your game, you are shit out luck. And the mod authors are not in anyway obligated to fix anything.
#116 - anon (04/24/2015) [-]
The refund is bullshit btw, you dont get your money back it goes into your steam wallet. The money doesnt leave Valve's hands after you give it to them anymore.
#88 - sleepehz (04/24/2015) [-]
By giving money to the mod devs you are giving them a lot of things. This can pay for them to keep developing, to keep supporting, or even encourage them to program their own games. I have always told people skyrim with mods is the best game ever, and i will ALWAYS standby those words. However the past 2 years has been almost abysmal for the game in respect to mods because not too many people have been releasing quality content. This could bring some really great developers back to the game to keep working on it. ALSO we could see the people who are working on Fallout:NV- Project Brazil get some extra dosh for their hard work (And believe you me as someone who has been following the project, they HAVE worked hard and deserve a few bucks for their trouble.) It is a shame that steam is taking 75%, maybe they should make it an even 50/50, or maybe that is keeping the price down? But that is just my own opinion, if you dont like it, dont buy it and it will go away. Like i said, it IS a FREE market that we are creating.
